2Minor Assignment: RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Research topic: The importance of praising pupils in motivating them to study and exhibit  good behaviour s
It is a very common ways of Bruneian teachers to present either positive or negativereinforcement in teaching and learning. Praising pupils can be seen as positive reinforcementoccurs when the events that follow behaviour strengthen its frequency, duration and intensity. Therefore behaviour that is praised by the teacher is likely to be repeated by the pupils. In theother hand, negative reinforcement means increasing the strength of a given response byremoving an unpleasant stimulus when the response occurs such as being held back for tenminutes in the lunch break. Therefore the statement of giving punishment is part of negativereinforcement is not totally right because punishment is a process that weakens a behaviour. This research will be focused on how effective and frequent is praising among BruneianPrimary pupils in motivating them to study well and perform good behaviours like what theteachers asked them to do.
 Rationale of the proposed research.
According to a study, by lecturers at Liverpool John Moores University (2006), teachers whospend time scolding children for disrupting classes fail to improve the performances of their  pupils. They had also discovered that the pupils behaved positively when they were treatedwell by the teacher during classes. For example, the pupils seem to respond positively in their study and behaviour when the teacher went around and praised them frequently on their goodachievement and contribution in learning.

3Minor Assignment: RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Therefore, the main objective of my research is to investigate on how the Bruneian Primaryteachers usually do to motivate their pupils. The research is also used to identify howfrequently the pupil is being praised in a day and in what ways.I am also interested on a phrase which says "Catch them doing something right". It seems to be the latest good advice to teachers who faced with unruly classes. Obviously, children need praise for good behaviour as well as good work and constant telling off has little effect, whichhas helped to improve classroom behaviour dramatically. The analysis will also be based on how true the phrase above and whether it is applicable toBruneian Primary Schools’ pupils. I have seen many Bruneian teachers who have given punishment and rewards to their pupils in order to motivate and reinforce them to performwell in their studies or to behave properly. Furthermore, the research will be used to analysewhether the teachers can create a supportive interaction and relationship between the teacher and pupil and how it can be used to improve and boost their motivation to improve their study and behaviour.
 Research Questions
I have identified THREE (3) research questions for my research.
1.
Why is it important to use of praising in teaching and learning process?
2.
What kind of praising the Bruneian teacher usually used in the classroom?
3.
How can the effective praising help teachers to motivate the pupils to study andexhibit good behaviours?
