Presidents Report
The Value Proposition
by Martha Schweitzer
I
t came out during the panel discussion at a recent meeting of the Businessand Finance Group on the changing role of the librarian. It hung in theair for a while then settled into receptive minds in the audience and ques-tions followed. It was voiced by Barbara Hirsh, Knowledge Manager atPricewaterhouseCoopers. She said that, over the years, she has come to viewherself — her talents, intellect, experience and skills developed over time —as the information product. She brings value to the organizations she joins by using her knowledge to help with the content consulting, review, analysis, anddelivery of the information needed for the success of the company. As otherson the panel agreed, in the changing role of the librarian, professionals seek and grab onto opportunities to explore new realms that can benefit from this value they provide. The Library physically has evolved as the stock in trade— books — has been supplemented by information in electronic formats. Sotoo, the librarian as a professional has evolved into a virtual operative at homein a traditional library setting or moving in cyberspace. Often, the settingsconverge. The information professional's value proposition has shifted. This is not new. We know this. Many among you are acting upon it. Profes-sional development is taken quite seriously. Members of our Chapter arelooking for classes and courses offered on the topics and skills they need tomove ahead. Learning also comes through other means — networking withcolleagues, participating on professional discussion lists, experimenting withinformation initiatives in the workplace. This is where SLA enters the valueproposition. The Association offers opportunities — through seminars, net- working contexts, support for members' projects at work or in the Chapter— for us to develop professionally to meet the challenges we face. As we heard from Donna Scheeder at the Town Hall 2001, SLA is itself goingthrough many changes, streamlining and redirecting its efforts, in order toincrease the value it brings to the information equation for you. On ourChapter level, the Executive Board and Advisory Council have consideredand, in the coming months, will explore redesigning the open director posi-tion to create a Director of Professional Development position on the Board. We now need to put a more concerted effort behind finding professionaldevelopment opportunities and devising ways to make them available as abenefit of membership. We need to look at our current busy lives and findprograms that allow us to participate in a time flexible way.In early May, the Chapter hosts three enjoyable learning events. Our tenthCareer Day features speakers on the information professional’s workplace

and opportunities for career changers, among other advi-sorsfor newcomers to the arena. Our fourth IntranetSightings event spotlights innovative library intranetsites to inspire and instruct visitors. At our Annual Busi-ness Meeting we will award scholarships to three library school students and grants to three members to helpthem attend and participate in the educational opportu-nities at the conference in San Antonio. During theSpring Reception following the business meeting, thePresident of the Grand Central Partnership will intro-duce us to the delightful plans to transform East 41stStreet between Park and Fifth Avenues into Library Way. When Sandra Kitt spoke at our annual business meetinglast year, she perceptively noted that, as President, it takesa while to acquire the hang of the job, and once acquired,it’s time to hand over the job to the President-Elect. I havealso found that to be true. It has been an education andhonor to be your Chapter President. I appreciate thesupport, ideas, time and guidance so many of you havegiven me over the past two years. Thank you! There is anet that holds us together, because we share many com-mon goals, an approach to life and work, jokes and anunderstanding about the value of ourselves as products. And that net works for us. The value proposition SLA gives us as we work together is well worth our efforts.

he cover story of the Winter 2000-01 issue of Occupational Outlook Quarterly (U.S. Depart-ment of Labor) is “Librarians: Information Expertsin the Information Age”. It is an interesting report, andI was especially pleased to read the opening paragraph, which begins with our Chapter’s (and Arthur Andersen’s)own, “Marie Tirados searches for competitive intelli-gence every day...” Congratulations, Marie! The report can be found athttp://www.bls.gov/opub/ooq/ooqhome.htm. It has pro- jections for the job market, salaries in different library fields, an overview of the kinds of jobs librarians do,plus other job opportunities for those with a library degree. It is a 15-page PDF document. A special thanksto Kenneth Schlesinger, who told me about it.
