 Empowering Youth
is designedto be used with youth ages 11 to 18 and includesup-to-date nutrition and physical activity messagesbased on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines or Americans(DGAs) and MyPyramid. The inormation presentedhas the potential to empower youth to develop health-promoting habits that last a lietime.The
 Empowering Youth
manual includes inormationand act sheets on the risk actors or obesity, relatedchronic conditions, and other topics in a ormat thatis easy to present to youth. Interactive activities withhandouts illustrate nutrition and physical activityconcepts. The hands-on activities require minimalplanning and are designed to be un, educational, andeasily used within the classroom, aterschool program,or special events.
 
The manual contains strategiesor youth to develop and implement a nutrition- orphysical activity-related project within their schoolor community. Step-by-step guidance, worksheets,additional helpul tips, handouts, discussion prompters,and healthy recipes make the

or the word “whole” listed beore a grain, such as“whole wheat” or “whole corn” on the ingredient label.Other ingredients may not have the word “whole”but are still whole grains, such as graham four, wildrice, brown rice, cracked wheat, bulgur, crushed wheat, rolled oats, and oatmeal.Primary ingredients that indicate aood is NOT a whole-grain productinclude: white four, wheat four,unbleached four, durum four,semolina, grits, corn grits,hominy grits, degerminatedcorn meal, rice four, arina, andcouscous.Other conusing terms that usuallyDO NOT prove a product is wholegrain include multi-grain, stone-ground,100% wheat, cracked wheat, 7-grain, 9-grain,and bran. When you see one o these terms, examinethe ingredient statement careully to determine i theood really is whole grain.Remember, the Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid tell you to “Make hal o your grains whole.”

 What does it take to receive a
 HealthierUS School Challenge
award? Elementary schools applyby submitting descriptions o theirhealthy menu planning practices, a lacarte and school vended oerings,and their physical activity andnutrition education programs.Sometimes schools must workto meet the whole-grain criteriain the Challenge. For a Goldaward, schools must serve a whole-grain product every day.However, it may be tricky to tell i a product is really whole grain. I a whole grain is the rst ingredient in theingredient statement, this means that the grainis the primary ingredient, by weight.
