Culture and Society. When one stops to reflect upon things, one realises that aside from our
everyday discussions, the world we have created –qualified as western civilization– is full of great
achievements for humanity, and this is very obvious in the values we have been endowed with. These
achievements are the result of the efforts of great men through the history, as well of great feminine figures.
In this edition we make mention of two of them, Peggy Guggenheim and Gertrude Stein, two key
personalities (one as a collector, the other as an inspirer and creator) in the relevant role of the woman in
artistic creation and promotion. Artistic creation is, precisely, one of the most valuable tools that our society
possesses for pondering, questioning and finding a common denominator for our principles; and New Media
Art, the most innovative artistic expression, is a perfect example of this. For this reason, we explore in the
pages to follow what some have termed “the most authentic artistic revolution since the avant garde period
at the beginning of the 20th century”.
We have proposed a journey to review what we have achieved and what we assume we wish to achieve in
order to continue our progress. For the purpose, we have stopped by at a city which is the perfect example of
the how our society has evolved, having become predominantly urban over past decades. And, as befits the
subject matter, we have enveloped all this and more in the melodious voice and sensible words (see this for
yourselves inside the magazine) of a woman, Leonor Watling, who has brought her last recorded work to us.
We hope you will enjoy as much as we do this small demonstration of the cultural and social achievements
that surround us in our daily lives.

LENNON O McCARTNEY
3 Lennon o McCartney. Javier Sampedro proposes in Summer Magazine (El País, Saturday, 25th
August), a curious debate on musical creation in the heart of the rock group par excellence, The
Beatles. “Following the break-up of the group in 1970, neither of the two (Paul McCartney and John Lennon)
managed to come near the creative levels which, together, they had systematically achieved. Therefore: it’s not a
matter of either Lennon or McCartney, but ‘Lennon and McCartney’. But why, since they never composed their songs
together? It was because Paul was the formalizer of experiments made by John, who was a true stylistic sponge.
This was so since their first basic period – John writes Little Child and Paul responds with Hold Me Tight – until their
acid period – John writes Strawberry Fields and Paul responds with Penny Lane. Some critics on the dialectic side
relate this to the social extraction of both musicians; music was always an art for middle-class Lennon, but a craft
for working-class McCartney”.

W hen I arrived without warning – this happened in 1967 – at his office in the Balmes
Institute in Madrid, linked to the headquarters for scientific research (Consejo
Superior de Investigaciones Científicas), the man emphatically denied having been
responsible for the death of Federico García Lorca. But he admitted that he had
been the person who had arrested the poet, a month after the start of the fratricidal
fighting, and taken him to the Civil Government House in Granada. Obeying orders,
he insisted, from the rebel civil governor of the city, Commandant José Valdés
Guzmán. The interview is included in my book The Nationalist Repression of Granada and the Death of Federico García Lorca,
published in Paris by Ruedo Ibérico (1971) and immediately prohibited by the Franco dictatorship.
After that encounter of four decades ago, I never ceased to be obsessed by Ramón Ruiz Alonso and I was able to add
to successive editions of my book new information on this individual and his performance in those ill-fated moments. If
I have decided to publish this book now it is because I believe that this ex-member of the CEDA (Confederación
Española de Derechas Autónomas) – author of a fascist manual, Corporativism, published in Salamanca at the height of
the Civil War – deserves some study in greater depth.
Born into a well-to-do family from Villaflores, Salamanca, in 1903, schooled by the Salesian Brothers, Ruiz Alonso arri-
ved in Granada in 1932 to work as a type-setter in the printers producing the famous Ideal newspaper, Editorial Católica,
which achieved an almost overnight success with the Granada middle-class population. He also brought with him the
acknowledged mission of fighting dauntlessly against the PSOE party, whose leaders he hated with all his guts. Tall,
burly, fanatically Catholic, with a load voice and aggressive ways, a convincing, charismatic speaker at meetings, “Gil
Robles’ trained worker” – apparently José

exception, were swindlers whose sole end consis-

that cost García Lorca his life?” in 1933, Ruiz Alonso’s propaganda campaigns won
him many enemies on the Republican side and
turned him into the best-known ultra-reactionary in the city and its surroun-
ding province.
Although the right wing won in Granada in February 1936, the results were dis-
qualified by the Popular Front Government, who alleged abuse and coercion. In
the partial elections in May, Ruiz Alonso finally lost his seat. From that time on,
as he himself asserts, he began to actively conspire against a democracy that he
despised. A few days before the uprising, he returned to Granada from Madrid,
where the city already having fallen to the rebel forces; it did not take him long to
join the repression that cost the lives of thousands of Republicans.
Was Ruiz Alonso involved, in addition to the arrest, in the accusation that
cost the poet his life? The weight of the information that we have gleaned
nowadays and which is described in the book, indicates that he was. At this
stage it is obvious, moreover, that right wing Granada – represented by Ruiz
Alonso and qualified by Lorca as “the worst bourgeoisie of Spain” – hated not
only the poet but also the father, a rich landowner who, unlike the CEDA des-
pots, supported the Republic, was a friend of Fernández de los Ríos and, before
1931, had occupied important positions in local politics.
Thirty-two years have passed since the death of Franco and the start of the
democratic transition. I believe that the Second Republic and the Civil War, in
all its aspects and nuances, can and should now be serenely studied and resear-
ched, with no hard feelings of resentment or revenge, but indeed, with the desi-
re to do the truth justice. Regarding the murder of one of the greatest Spanish
poets of all times, there is still, today, so much that we do not know and that we
would like to know and which, in my opinion, it is necessary to know.
The art of the future is already here. Interaction, collaboration and activism
are key words in one of the most interesting expressions of contemporary creativeness: New Media Art.

the point where, in order to define it, a new term must be invented: relational architecture, i.e. interactive events on a large scale capable of modifying
urban areas, historical buildings and natural environments by means of technological interfaces, manipulated by users via Internet. This is the miracle
of interaction: a key word in modern life, used ever more frequently, albeit often enough incorrectly.
Interaction and collaboration are shaping out as the great novelties in the introduction of new technologies in artistic practice. After years of
postmodern art, artists are quoting others less often and are turning back to inventing, giving rise to the first true revolution since the historical avant
garde movements that emerged from the Industrial Revolution. The finished work by the maestro that only asks to be admired, is now substituted by
projects evolving.

issue that stopped her from saying she was greater than
Shakespeare was that he was dead and could not reply.
Gertrude never doubted that she was a genius. So much so
that she considered herself to be the equivalent of Picasso in
writing. Perhaps, for that very reason, she wanted him to
paint her portrait. For three months, the writer posed for him
while Fernande Olivier read fables by De la Fontaine.
The painting, however, did not really satisfy its painter. One
day, on one of his habitual impulses, he repainted the head.
That piece of work was never touched again – despite the fact
that the model was not very pleased with it – and Picasso
made a pronouncement: “You all think that the portrait does
not look at all like her, but don’t worry; in the end she will
look like the portrait”. This canvas signified a new point of
departure for the painter, the first step in his incursion into
cubism.
Gertrude’s fame as a writer and her literary style
– inflexible, radical – surpassed the popularity of the most
famous of artists. This was one of the reasons that caused the

Conesa gana el III Premio
Eurostars Hotels
de Narrativa de viajes
LETRAS
3 Dr. Josep A. Pujante Conessa is the winer of the third edition of the Eurostars Hotels Travel Narrative Prize. The collection of short stories Course set to the seven
Islands, by doctor and sportsman Josep Antoni Pujante Conesa, has won the third edition of the Eurostars Hotels Travel Narrative Prize, an event organized by the Hotusa Group in
conjunction with the publishing house RBA Libros and the University of Barcelona, endowed with a prize fund of 18,000 euros. The judges forming the panel for this third edition
comprised, in addition to representatives from the collaborating entities, writers Ángela Vallvey and Alfredo Conde. Course set to the sevem Islands is the story of a personal challenge
that the author tackled after crowning the seven highest mountains on the five continents and the two polar regions: the ascent to the summits of the seven largest islands in the world.
The work presented for the competition is focused on three of his most exciting climbs that took place in Madagascar, New Guinea and Greenland. This is an adventure book in the best
style. It includes voyages to remote lands, recreates encounters with unknown cultures, describes hostile landscapes and meticulously details climbing experiences taken to the extreme
in life and death situations. A complete book, thrilling and moving, that clients staying at Eurostars Hotels will be able to enjoy free of charge as from December, 2007.
Josep A. Pujante (Barcelona, 1956), a medical man, writer and diplomat from Catalonia is a prolific traveller, adventurer and sportsman who has received 16 medals, amongst
them an award by the Order of the International Olympic Committee. He is the second person in history to have crowned the Seven Summits, the highest peaks on the five
continents and polar regions, as well as the seven largest islands in the world. Pujante asserts that “climbing mountains is not a sport, it is culture, it is ethnology, anthropology,
science, religion; it is many things. If I just described where I climb, the books would be only five pages long, but this cultural vision gives rise to far more that must be told”.

3 Fashion and accessories. This season, winter textiles like wool and tweed contrast with the lighter ones, such as silk
and crêpe. The warm tones (pinks, coppers and yellows) are mixed with cold colours (browns, greys and blues). The elegant
designs by Aigner Barbarella (1) or Purificación García, rub shoulders with the sophistication of Loewe and Matilde Cano.
3 Shoes incorporate small platforms for her and shoe-laces and metal appliqués for him (1/ Pepe Castell). Bags and purses
imitate the old doctors’ bags or postmen’s shoulder bags (3/ Petusco).
