This Mini Real happening at a restaurant teaches us a Mega lesson for better working at job or your business,, better relationships and of-course better life.
Three women met in a restaurant.Yeah, you can guess??? lots of discussions, exchange of news and views, loads of information. One particular topic of their discussion caught my attention. One of the ladies, with lot of interest was sharing some factsabout cockroach. with a lot of amazement, she was tellinghow acockroach can run three miles in an hour and can changedirections 25 times in a second. A cockroach could live a longtime, perhaps a week, without its head. There was nonstop excitement in her voice as she continuedsaying, “a cockroach has amazing adaptability. It can survive in anyclimate, in any house condition, inside any crack, etc. Their antenna, which rivals nasa's global, positioning system, helps it to locate other cockroaches with state-of-the-art precision.Page 1 of 4
Cockroaches could be used to place surveillance devicesin military installations. In fact, a cockroach can surviveeven an attack of atomic explosion!.”
A cockroach, suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on her.
I wondered if this was the cockroach's response to all the glorythat was spoken about it!She started screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face andtrembling voice, she started doing stationary jumping, with bothher hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach. Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also gotpanicky & cranky to what was happening. The lady finallymanaged to push the cockroach away but, it landed on another lady in the group. Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continuethe drama. The waiter rushed forward to their rescue. in the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter. The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behavior of thecockroach on his shirt. When he was confident enough, hegrabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.Sipping my coffee and watching the amusement, the antenna of my mind picked up a few thoughts and started wondering,“wasthe cockroach responsible for their histrionic behavior? If so, thenwhy was the waiter not disturbed? He handled it near to perfection, without any chaos. It was not the cockroach, but the inability of the ladies to handlethe disturbance caused by the cockroach thatdisturbed the ladies”.
I realized, “even in my case then, it is not the shouting of my father or my boss or my wife that disturbs me, but it's my inability to handle thedisturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs me.It's not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs me, but my inability tohandle the disturbance caused by the traffic jam that disturbs me.In all, it isnot something that disturbs me, but it is my inability tohandle the disturbance caused by that something that disturbs me.Page 2 of 4
More than the problem, it is my reaction to the problem, which hurts me more or creates chaos in my life."
A natural question popped up in my mind, “then, how do I outgrowthis limitation?”lessons learned from the story: I understood,
I should not react in life; I should always respond.
The women
, whereas the waiter
Reactions are always instinctive whereas responses are always wellthought of or intellectual, just and right to save a situation fromgoing out of hand, to avoid cracks in relationship, to avoid takingdecisions in anger, anxiety, stress or hurry.
Between the stimuli (what happens to me) and the response(what happens through me)
if there is no gap
, it creates reaction. But, between the stimuli and response, if I use the gap to thinkand contemplate, then I can respond thoughtfully. Respond, not react!
“An intelligent person responds; a fool reacts”.
I felt, if I am not a fool, then I must respond :-b ).Brought to you by:Brooklyn Vijay - Founder President
