Re-Connect: Contemporary Photography from Myanmar

Artists: Po Po, Tun Win Aung, Nyein Chan Su, Nge Lay, Aung Khin Myint, Aung Pyae, Kaung Htet
Curated by Zhuang Wubin (Singapore)

In recent years, Myanmar has re-emerged as the darling of global media, as the country embarks tentatively in the liberalization of her political landscape and her commercial arena. While Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has kept the flame of democracy alive for many years, it is the appointment of former general U Thein Sein as president that has kick-started the reforms across the country.

Meanwhile, interest in contemporary Southeast Asian art has continued to grow, even though the state of contemporary art is still in flux. The best Myanma artists, like their peers elsewhere in the world, have always kept an eye on the discourse of global art, without losing sight of what is happening on the streets of Yangon.

This exhibition brings together seven Myanma artists of different generations who approach photography in contrasting ways.

Despite the perceived isolation of the country, the works of Po Po and Nyein Chan Su show that the sense of identity amongst the Myanmar people has also been affected by globalization, fashion and propaganda. Artists like Tun Win Aung, Nge Lay and Aung Khin Myint adopt a more personal starting point in the projects that they present here, evoking our sense of mortality through the photographs that they create.

Photojournalists like Kaung Htet and Aung Pyae complete the selection, giving us an entry point into the exhibition and the changes that have come to the country. They are not mere observers, but active agents in shaping and contesting this new era of freedom in Myanmar.
