Excerpt from Breastless in the City.
Cathy Bueti knew tragedy and misfortune for as long as she could remember. As the shy daughter of an alcoholic father, she found refuge with her high school sweetheart who eventually became her husband. At age 25, a car accident left her widowed. Seven years later, still grieving her loss and suffering through many failed relationships, she discovered a lump in her breast. Bueti had always believed that “guys only like girls with long hair and big boobs” and now, she had lost a breast, her hair, and what little self-esteem she had. But with an ever-strengthening will, she sets out to find love and a partner with whom to share her life.
Breastless in the City is the unique story of a young woman’s search for love while undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Cathy Bueti’s memoir describes her experiences as a single dating woman going through a mastectomy and going bald, all while trying to find a man. This inspirational survivor’s story tells it like it is—the fears, missteps, and triumphs encountered along the way.
Cathy Bueti graduated from College Misericordia and has worked as an occupational therapist for several years. Bueti is an active and highly regarded spokesperson for the breast cancer community and has been profiled by CNN and other major media outlets. Her blog, “In My Life,” cathybueti.blogspot.com, is popular among patients and survivors. Bueti lives with her husband in New York.
