On May 25th, animal care staff at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park and veterinary staff from North Country Animal Health Center euthanized Roswell, the Zoos 20 year old American black bear. Beginning in late April, Roswell had begun exhibiting signs of deteriorating health. In the past week, Roswells health had further declined and his condition became a quality of life issue. Gross necropsy results showed advanced cancer in the lungs. Roswell arrived at the Zoo in 1994 from the West Virginia State Wildlife Center and was one of the Zoos founding residents. American Black Bear, or Ursus americanus, are found throughout Canada and in parts of the United States and Mexico. They have a lifespan of 18 years in the wild. The staff welcomes visitors who were familiar with Roswell to share photos and memories of him on the Zoos Facebook page. For further information please contact John Wright, Executive Director, at 315-755-0892.
