What could be the result of the GhatsMountain ranges on the climate of the Deccan Plateau?
The collision of tectonic plates that pushedup the Himalayas also created severalsmaller mountain ranges in central India,including the Vindhya(VIHN•dyuh) Range. To the south lies theDeccan Plateau. This large tableland tiltseast, toward the Bay of Bengal, andcovers much of southern India. Twomountain ranges, the Western Ghats andthe Eastern Ghats, flank the plateau,separating it from the coast. Thesemountains also block most moist winds andkeep rain from reaching the interior. Rivers,Deltas, and Plains The Northern IndianPlain lies between the Deccan Plateau andthe northern mountain ranges. This largelowland region stretches across northernIndia and into Bangladesh. It is formed bythree great river systems: the Indus, theGanges, and the Brahmaputra.
