Scientific Papers
Journal vs. Paper vs. Working Paper

Scientific Journal

A scientific journal is a periodical publication intended to further the progress of science, usually by reporting new research. There are thousands of scientific journals in publication, and many more have been published at various points in the past. Most journals are highly specialized, although some of the oldest journals such as Nature publish articles and scientific papers across a wide range of scientific fields. Scientific journals contain articles that have been peer reviewed, in an attempt to ensure that articles meet the journal's standards of quality, and scientific validity.

Scientific Paper
A scientific paper/article is a research
report that has been publised in a journal. Therefore it has been peer reviewed, in an attempt to ensure that the article meets the journal's standards of quality, and scientific validity.

Working Paper
A preliminary scientific or technical paper.
Often, authors will release working papers to share ideas about a topic or to elicit feedback before submitting to a peer reviewed conference oracademic journal.

Sometimes the term working paper is

used synonymously as technical report. Working papers are typically hosted on websites, belonging either to the author or the author's affiliated institution.

Dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants (Latin: nanos gigantum humeris insidentes) is a Western metaphor with a contemporary interpretation meaning "One who develops future intellectual pursuits by understanding and building on the research and works created by notable thinkers of the past". Its most familiar expression is found in the letters of Isaac Newton:

If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

However, the metaphor was first recorded in the twelfth century and attributed to Bernard of Chartres
