Live by your Week By Week

Succeeding in college requires organization, and theUniversity designs a planner speciically or UNC-CHstudents — The Carolina Week by Week. The organizercontains important dates, like inal-exam schedules andUniversity holidays. The planner can help you keep track o your assignments throughout the year, too. Proessorswill give you syllabi with all o the dates you need toknow on the irst day o class. Write down every due datein your Week by Week! Proessors might orget to remindyou o assignments as the semester goes on, and youreally don’t want to ind out about that 30-percent-o-your-grade paper as the rest o your classmates turn it in.
Utilize the University Career Services

Be sure not to overlook that pamphlet you got atorientation. UCS is very helpul. A trip to its oicecould mean iguring out your major or learning aboutopportunities to get involved at the University. “I wentto see (UCS) or help with my resume to apply to thebusiness school, and it really did help a lot,” said WadePerry, a rising junior and a business major. “They help tolet you know what should be included on a resume andwhat shouldn’t, and they help you to make what you’vedone sound more proessional.
Have your projected academicschedule planned out
Don’t just log on to Student Central during yourassigned registration time slot and sign up or the irstclasses you see. Use the Undergraduate Bulletin andthe online course search engine to ind the class andsection numbers o the classes you want to take
before
you register. Write them down on a sheet o paper inorder o priority, along with your registration PersonalIdentiication Number. Having all o this inormationorganized and laid out in one place makes registrationless hectic and stressul, and it can help you slip into thelast available seat in a class you need.

Go to office hours
Proessors oten encourage students to come to oicehours, but ew actually do. Going to your proessor’soice hours can help you master material and can helpthe proessor get to know you personally, especially i theclass is a large lecture with limited interaction. Mike Wei,a 2008 UNC-CH graduate, said he beneited greatly romgoing to one proessor’s non-traditional oice hours. “Wemet at Top o the Hill (Restaurant), and we asked (theproessor) questions about our upcoming test,” Wei said.“I liked that it was in a relaxing environment, and it wasvery helpul.”
Hold study groups in classrooms
Most students don’t know that the University leavesthe doors o classrooms unlocked in the aternoon andevening. The rooms in the Undergraduate Library andin Davis ill up quickly, and the classrooms provide youwith an alternative place to study where you are ree totalk and use the boards as study aids. “They’re general-purpose classrooms ater 5 p.m., so i it’s unlocked thenanyone can use them,” said Sourygna Ku, events planningassistant at the Student Union. “The only people thatcan tell you to get out o a room is a janitor or anorganization that has reserved the room.”
Work hard, and get off to a good start
One o the worst things youcan do is start o with a gradethat will taint your grade-pointaverage or the rest o youryears here. Begin your collegecareer the right way. “Study asmuch as you can,” said BrittneyRoberts, a rising sophomore and abiology major. “Any time you have reading, do it becausethere are so ew tests, and the grades count or so much.Every year and every semester counts.
Don’t be afraid of theDavis Library elevators

The braver you are, the better o you’ll be, and thehigher the loor in Davis, the more likely you are toind a work-riendly environment. “I’ve always oundthat the irst two loors are really loud, and it’s hard toconcentrate in that environment,” said Steven Kinsella, arising sophomore. So take that elevator on up, and eventhough it might eel like the doors are not going to open, don’t worry. They will — eventually.
Keep an open mind, and take your timepicking a major
Though the General Collegerequirements can be rustratingto ulill, they expose you to dierenttypes o courses that can diversiy yourcollege experience. Some students ind they enjoyulilling the requirements more than they thought.“Take classes you normally wouldn’t look at and that stillinterest you,” said Angel Cockerham, a rising junior. “Youmight be surprised with the outcome.”
Head down to the Kenan-FlaglerBusiness School
Make it your weekend study destination. For thosewho rely on the libraries on campus to study, it’s badnews that the Undergraduate Library closes at 6 p.m. onFridays and Saturdays and doesn’t re-open until 11 a.m.on Sundays. But there is an excellent alternative that notmany know about. The Business School, which is open24/7, has huge couches and comortable chairs anddesks that are perect or an easy weekend homework session. Use them!
Make friends with that person whoalways talks in class
As hard as it might be, don’t be annoyed by this person;instead, beriend them. I you ever miss class and arein need o notes, one o the more attentive studentswill more than likely be able to help. And althougha student’s level o class participation might notdirectly correlate with subject mastery,beriending someone who is activein class might provide you with agood study group as tests near.I nothing else, you might justmake a new riend.
