Go to office hours
Proessors oten encourage students to come to oicehours, but ew actually do. Going to your proessor’soice hours can help you master material and can helpthe proessor get to know you personally, especially i theclass is a large lecture with limited interaction. Mike Wei,a 2008 UNC-CH graduate, said he beneited greatly romgoing to one proessor’s non-traditional oice hours. “Wemet at Top o the Hill (Restaurant), and we asked (theproessor) questions about our upcoming test,” Wei said.“I liked that it was in a relaxing environment, and it wasvery helpul.”
Hold study groups in classrooms
Most students don’t know that the University leavesthe doors o classrooms unlocked in the aternoon andevening. The rooms in the Undergraduate Library andin Davis ill up quickly, and the classrooms provide youwith an alternative place to study where you are ree totalk and use the boards as study aids. “They’re general-purpose classrooms ater 5 p.m., so i it’s unlocked thenanyone can use them,” said Sourygna Ku, events planningassistant at the Student Union. “The only people thatcan tell you to get out o a room is a janitor or anorganization that has reserved the room.”
Work hard, and get off to a good start
One o the worst things youcan do is start o with a gradethat will taint your grade-pointaverage or the rest o youryears here. Begin your collegecareer the right way. “Study asmuch as you can,” said BrittneyRoberts, a rising sophomore and abiology major. “Any time you have reading, do it becausethere are so ew tests, and the grades count or so much.Every year and every semester counts.”
Don’t be afraid of theDavis Library elevators
The braver you are, the better o you’ll be, and thehigher the loor in Davis, the more likely you are toind a work-riendly environment. “I’ve always oundthat the irst two loors are really loud, and it’s hard toconcentrate in that environment,” said Steven Kinsella, arising sophomore. So take that elevator on up, and eventhough it might eel like the doors are not going to open, don’t worry. They will — eventually.
Keep an open mind, and take your timepicking a major
Though the General Collegerequirements can be rustratingto ulill, they expose you to dierenttypes o courses that can diversiy yourcollege experience. Some students ind they enjoyulilling the requirements more than they thought.“Take classes you normally wouldn’t look at and that stillinterest you,” said Angel Cockerham, a rising junior. “Youmight be surprised with the outcome.”
Head down to the Kenan-FlaglerBusiness School

For thosewho rely on the libraries on campus to study, it’s badnews that the Undergraduate Library closes at 6 p.m. onFridays and Saturdays and doesn’t re-open until 11 a.m.on Sundays. But there is an excellent alternative that notmany know about. The Business School, which is open24/7, has huge couches and comortable chairs anddesks that are perect or an easy weekend homework session. Use them!
Make friends with that person whoalways talks in class
As hard as it might be, don’t be annoyed by this person;instead, beriend them. I you ever miss class and arein need o notes, one o the more attentive studentswill more than likely be able to help. And althougha student’s level o class participation might notdirectly correlate with subject mastery, beriending someone who is activein class might provide you with agood study group as tests near.I nothing else, you might justmake a new riend.
