Sun Ray Overview
Zero-administration Sun Ray virtual displayclients enable access to applications onvirtually any platform – the Solaris[TM]Operating System, Java [TM] technology,Linux, UNIX® Microsoft Windows, AS/400, andmainframes. Sun Ray clients differ fromcomplex PCs and thin clients with embeddedoperating systems because Sun Ray clientshave no local operating system (such asWindows XP Embedded or Windows CE) tomanage and administer.Sun Ray architecture consists of twocomponents: the Sun Ray display client andSun Ray SoftwareThe Sun Ray client is a simple, low-cost, low-power device that requires no desktopadministration. Unlike complex MicrosoftWindows or Embedded Linux-based thinclients and PCs, Sun Ray clients do not need tobe upgraded when new applications areintroduced or more computing power isrequired. Users can access their sessions fromany Sun Ray display device on the Local AreaNetwork (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).With a smart card, a user simply inserts it intoany available Sun Ray client andinstantaneously accesses an existing session.Sun Ray Software provides user authenticationand encryption between server and client, aswell as user session management. It not onlyenhances security, but also helps reduce thecomplexity and administration of the ITenvironment. Sun Ray Software providesautomatic load balancing, optimizingperformance by distributing sessions acrossthe servers in the group. Load balancing takesinto account each server's load and capacity(number and speed of its CPUs), so that largeror less heavily loaded servers bear more of theload. Sun Ray Software enables the Sun Rayclients to connect to either a local areanetwork (LAN) or a wide area network (WAN).
