Distribution of the Report of the First Session of the Codex Committee onMilk and Milk Products (ALINORM 95/11) The report of the First Session of the Codex Committee on Milk and MilkProducts is attached. It will be considered by the Twenty-first Session of the CodexAlimentarius Commission which is scheduled to be held in Rome from 3-8 July 1995.
MATTERS FOR ADOPTION BY THE 21ST SESSION OF THE CODEX ALIMENTARIUS COMMISSION

Governments wishing to propose amendments or to comment on the DraftStandards for Whey Powders and for Edible Casein Products should do so in writing inconformity with the Guide to the Consideration of Standards at Step 8 of the Procedurefor the Elaboration of Codex Standards Including Consideration of Any StatementsRelating to Economic Impact
(Codex Alimentarius Procedural Manual,
Eighth Edition,pp. 33-35) to the Chief, Joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, FAO, Via delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100 Rome, Italy, not later than 30 April 1995.

Governments wishing to propose amendments or to submit comments regardingthe implications which the Proposed Draft Revised Standards or any provisions thereof may have for their economic interest should do so in writing in conformity with theProcedures for the Elaboration of Codex Standards and Related Texts (at Step 5)
(Codex Alimentarius Procedural Manual,
Eighth Edition, pp. 28-29) to the Chief, JointFAO/WHO Food Standards Programme, FAO, Via delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100Rome, Italy, not later than 30 April 1995.
 
SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
 The First Session of the Codex Committee on Milk and Milk Products reachedthe following conclusions:
MATTERS FOR CONSIDERATION BY THE COMMISSION OR ITS EXECUTIVECOMMITTEE
 - Recommended the adoption of the Draft Standards for Whey Powders and forEdible Casein Products at Step 8 (para. 114);- Recommended the adoption of the Proposed Draft Revised Standards for thefollowing at Step 5 (para. 114);

Milk and Cream Powders

Whey Cheese;- Recommended to initiate the following new work:

Elaboration of standards for (a) fermented milk products with heat treatmentafter fermentation, and (b) fermented milk products without heat treatment(para. 54);

Review of the Code of Principles concerning Milk and Milk Products (paras.24, 31);
-
Heat treatment definitions (para. 20); and
-
Nutritional and quality descriptors used for milk products (paras. 21-22);
-
Accepted in principle the methods of analysis and sampling recommended by theIDF/ISO/AOAC Tripartite Group on Methods of Analysis and Sampling (para. 28);
-
Decided to seek in future the endorsement of methods of analysis for milkproducts by the Codex Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling, thatwould need the amendment of the Terms of Reference of the CCMAS (para. 29).

Agreed that the Committee should retain the responsibility for butter and alsointerests in standards for other milkfat products and in products which weremixtures of milkfat and other fats (paras. 46, 82);
OTHER MATTERS OF INTEREST TO THE COMMISSION

Returned the Draft Standards for Cheeses in Brine and for Unripened Cheesesto Step 6 (para. 114);

Returned the Proposed Draft Revised Standards for the following to Step 3 forrevision and government comments (paras. 52-53,114):
