Teaching Essay Strategies will enable 4th-12th grade writing teachers to serve as both "sages on the stage" and "guides on the side" with no teacher prep and with no at-home grading. Compare to Step-up-to Writing® (Auman): Teaching Essay Strategies is a comprehensive, step-by-step, standards-based, sequential curriculum with a well-defined instructional scope and sequence, not merely a collection of nice writing resources or ways to fold paper for essay pre-writes.

Direct Instruction

Get a full year of rhetorical stance, sentence revision (sentence combining and grammatical sentence models), writing style, and transition "ten-minute writing openers" for interactive discussion. Teacher tips provided, of course. These resources require no teacher prep-just turn on the LCD or overhead projector and teach.

Individualized Instruction

Using sequential essay strategy worksheets, students move from simple three-word paragraphs to complex multi-paragraph essays, learning all of the grammar and proper usage they need to know in the context of authentic writing practice. Following a mastery learning model, a student completes an essay strategy worksheet, mini-conferences with the teacher, and then revises to mastery level before progressing at his or her own individual pace to the next writing strategy worksheet. Most students will complete (and revise to mastery level) eight informational and persuasive multi-paragraph essays by the end of the school year, if the teacher spends 90 minutes per week on this comprehensive writing program.

Unlike other writing programs, all additional writing resources, such as remedial worksheets, writing fluency and skill lessons, posters, and editing resources are provided in Teaching Essay Strategies, allowing teachers to truly differentiate instruction within the writing program itself.

Timed fluencies for formative on-demand assessments with accompanying reading passages and graphic organizers will help teachers formatively assess student progress and prepare students for standardized essay tests.

Find everything you need to teach students how to compose coherent and unified essays in one comprehensive program. Easy to use, Teaching Essay Strategies frees up teachers to teach. Your students will be amazed at their measurable writing progress. 354 pages
