The 2006 National Defense Autho-rization Act lets the Department of De-fense offer reservists a variety of ben-efits more on par with their active-dutycounterparts, said Chuck Witschonke,DOD’s deputy director for compensa-tion. President George W. Bush signedthe defense bill Jan. 6.One big change is a provision thatshortens the duty time before reserv-ists qualify for the full housing allow-ance. People called to active duty fornon-contingency operations for morethan 30 days will now get the full al-lowance, just as active-duty troops do.Previously, it was at least 140 days. For reservists who experience paycuts when called to active duty, a newprovision for income replacement willhelp reduce the strain military serviceplaces on the family, Mr. Witschonkesaid. The income-replacement programwon’t be instituted for six months, inaccordance with the law. At that time, specific guidelines and qualificationswill be issued, he said. This authoritywill end in December 2008.The act also permits increases inrecruiting bonuses for reservists.People could get accession and affilia-tion bonuses of up to $20,000 to enlistin the Selected Reserve, and officerscould see an increase from $6,000 to$10,000 for initial service. People whopossess a designated critical skill couldearn a bonus of up to $100,000.More information about pay andbenefits is posted on the DOD’s mili-tary compensation Web site atwww.defenselink.mil/militarypay/ (AFRC News Service from AmericanForces Press Service)
