Monroe: 40 years of allure
Douglas Kirkland captured the screen idol as icon
By Finlo Rohrer
BBC News Online entertainment staff
Forty years after her body was found in a bungalowin Brentwood, Los Angeles, Marilyn Monroe stillfascinates.Audrey Hepburn, James Dean, Steve McQueen,John Lennon and Elvis remain celebrities beyondthe grave, but most of all Monroe epitomises whatit means to be an icon.Often photographed, often impersonated, thesestars shared good looks, unconventional lifestyleseven by celebrity standards, and lives that endedtragically and prematurely. It is still Marilyn Monroe whose star shines thebrightest. While other pin-ups, poster girls andprimadonnas have faded in the public's collectiveconsciousness, Monroe's image is as instantlyrecognisable as it ever was.Her extraordinary photogenic qualities helped makea star out of her and she made names for thepeople who photographed her.
Photographer and star getintimate
Just as PatrickDemarchelier and MarioTestino found widerfame by photographingPrincess Diana, so EveArnold, Bert Stern andDouglas Kirkland greatlyenhanced theirreputations by capturingthe screen icon.
Great insecurity
Many fans say theyremain captivated by the mystery and complexityof Monroe's character. She was an exhibitionist who was said to have sleptwith the Kennedys as well as many of Hollywood'smost powerful men, but was also consumed byinsecurity.Fascination with her convoluted private life wasexacerbated by a death that has led to fourdecades of murder conspiracy theories. One of her last photo-shoots was with Kirkland, with Monroe naked except for a white sheet. Theimages are currently being shown for the first timein Britain.

Gallery owner AlexProud agrees that thestar's mix of power andvulnerability explainedmuch of her appeal."When you see picturesof her it makes the hairson the back of yourneck stand up. Sheeither has a genuineethereal, magical, musequality or I've beenprogrammed to feel likethat. I think it is theformer.
