GREAT guest writes in this issue. We are very happy that they are writing some
articles for us. Some of you had ask me to do an article on 4 man hall clearing so I
will in this issue as well as hand signs. I think all would enjoy it. We are also
starting to build our tactical training room for our counter home invasion, clearing
your own home, airsoft play just to name a couple. We are going to have a BLAST
with that!
We are splitting our website in to two Division, due to the over whelming response
to our Reality Based Martial Arts and NOW our Combatives for Military and Law
Enforcement and Government agencies, special operation teams and of course
Civilians. Please be looking for the new website changes as I think you will be
Mr.& Mrs. Traylor Owner &
blown away by the changes and the new courses offered on the combative side.
Founders of D.G.C.F.S. System.
Mrs.Traylor and I will be offering seminar to instructors, civilians, L.E. Officers and
Military Personal around the U.S. and abroad as Dark Gift Combat Fighting System
is starting to get recognized. We have been asked to do a seminar with a few
Instructors at Universal City and have been asked to may be also do one in Dallas
and Austin, Corpus Christi, This will not affect us being here at the studio or with
our classes as most will be over the weekend or over a 3 to 4 day course.
New video should be up on our website, a commercial and new training videos on
gross motor skill set and stick trapping and maybe some boxing trapping. If any
one out there wishes to see an article on a particular topic please let us know.
We are also in the works on putting together our first series of DVD’s for Reality
Based Martial Arts and Dark Gift Combat Fighting System. So be looking, we are
all excited in anticipation for 2009 and what the future holds for D.G.C.F.S.

You’ve heard the saying, “Everyone has a plan until you get hit.” It happens to
everybody. You can have a 10th degree black belt in 10 different arts but if you get
into a real fight on the street or on the battlefield, none of the techniques you’ve
learned seem to look the same or may not work altogether. In fact, a bystander may
not even be able to tell you are a martial artist at all because pretty much all
technique is out the window.
What happens to us on the street during a fight is a natural reaction that has been
happening to humans since our first cave fight. In an effort for survival, the human
body will shut down all but the essential functions to survive. What this means is
that if you are confronted with a seriously threatening or life threatening situation,
your body’s ability to do anything but fight back will be diminished. And when I say
fight back, I mean fight back in the most primitive form; gross motor skills and cave
man like flailing. When your heart beat reaches a certain level and adrenaline is
surging through your body, you start to get tunnel vision, you experience loss of
Mr. Bodungen Co-Founder of hearing, and complex motor skills become nearly impossible. Therefore, so too are
A.R.C.. Instructor in Hand to complex martial arts movements and techniques. So does this mean that technique
Hand Combat at D.G.C.F.S. training is useless? Can we learn to fight effectively on the street using technique
and not resort to a slug fest? Do you remember your first roller coaster ride? I do…
Inside D.G.C.F.S. and I about lost my stomach. I clinched my teeth, held on, and could barely stand it
until it was all over. However, what happened after that? The second ride wasn’t so
Happy New Year 1 bad. The third was even easier. By the time I had a few rides under my belt I could
Mike’s Fitness Corner 2 barely feel the G-forces anymore. So what happened? My body adapted. It

Hall Clearing 10
Lack of realistic training 11 stresses we encounter during a real street fight or life threatening attack. But, the
D.G.C.F.S. Combative Modules 14 key word is “proper” training. You can have all the training techniques down perfect
for years and years but if you will still fall victim to the same crippling human
physiological reactions if you are not training properly. So how do we train to
overcome this? Well, if getting hit causes this reaction on the street, you have to get
hit in the training studio… again, and again, and again, and again, until your body
adapts and gets used to the idea and action of getting hit. You may be saying, “But
we spar all the time.” Sparring is not training for the street. Sparring is training for
points and sport. In order for your body to adapt, you must simulate a real street
fight or attack. You must have an “attacker” not a sparring partner. Does that fighter
pilot just perform a limited set of controlled actions in a simulator to be battle ready?
No, he also goes all out in life-like battle simulations up in the air against opponents
simulating the enemy over and over again. Your training must be the same. Your
attacker must come at you with the force and malicious intent that a real street attacker would instead of “pop shotting”
you, attacking and retreating, and picking shots like a sport fighter. You can, and should, even start off in full pads and
work your way up in intensity and eventually less protection. Do drills that get used to the feeling of taking a hit. Learn to
keep your vision while taking a hit and being attacked. Put yourself in stressful training situations. Do drills that force you
to keep your concentration while being attacked. Do drills that simulate an ambush. Put yourself in situations that make
you nervous. If you become complacent, step it up or change the routine to something that stimulates nervous response
and duress. This is known as pain and stress inoculation. This is the type of training that will force your body to adapt to
those types of stressful environments and perform at a level like never before. Just remember, in order to perform
effectively in a stressful environment or situation, you must train in that environment. If you want to learn to fight in the
cage or score points, go spar. If you want to learn to fight effectively in a real life street fight, train like you are in a street
fight! Next month I will go over these drills in more detail. Until then, train hard and train real!

Control of the Family
If there’s nothing more to the holidays then getting together with family and friends, it wouldn’t get much sweeter than that.
That is until you brother-in-law, father-in-law, brother, uncle, or whoever has one too many drinks because we forgot to cut
him off after dinner. Now you have a person in your home that isn’t a robber or an intruder of any type, getting angrier
because he lost money on the game or something that happened in the past that he like to relive or maybe they’re just
jerks. The question is do I just go ape on this guy and wreck his life, never hearing the end of it around the holidays or any
other time for that matter, maybe even only hearing about it on visiting day in the county lock up.
This type of situation is where our control over ourselves and our methods is a very crucial part of our training. Your
family member may deserve an elbow to the ear, but it would be more beneficial to keep the peace by using controlling
techniques and locks. Using sweeps, takedowns, and throws are acceptable as well, just try to refrain from the
combination punches and crippling knee kicks or breaks. Just use enough force as needed, and being drunk and full of
adrenaline it would be best to take out the legs, and manipulate the joints. The use of pressure points may not be the
wisest of choices. However, a lock and anything to take him off balance would be the best way to deal with this situation.
Using restraints and anything that would put him down with permanent damage is suitable.
Example: He takes a druken swing (don’t forget to read his body language), you duck under him while moving in, shoot
inside and grab for a double leg take down, drive forward to knock him off balance and try to merely lay on top of his chest
pinning him down. Any lock here would be okay as well. You’re not looking for a submission or a break, but just
something that will hold him down and tire him out.
This is the importance of learning control over you and over you techniques, and using retraining holds and locks is a
good thing to add to your tool box if you haven’t already. Have a safe holiday season and remember to train for any
situation.

Hall Clearing
(1) Serpentine. The serpentine technique is used in narrow hallways. The number 1 man provides security to the
front. His sector of fire includes any enemy soldiers who appear at the far end of the hall or from any doorways
near the end. The number 2 and number 3 men cover the left and right sides of the number 1 man. Their sectors
of fire include any soldiers who appear suddenly from nearby doorways on either side of the hall. The number 4
man, normally carrying the M249, provides rear protection against any enemy soldiers suddenly appearing behind
the clearing team.
(2) Rolling T. The rolling-T technique is used in wide hallways. The number 1 and number 2 men move abreast,
covering the opposite side of the hallway from the one they are walking on. The number 3 man covers the far end
of the hallway from a position behind the number 1 and number 2 men, firing between them. Once again, the
number 4 man provides rear security.
Page 10
(3) Clearing "T" Intersections. Figure 3-40 depicts the fire team's actions upon reaching a hallway "T"
intersection when approaching from the base of the "T". The fire team is using the serpentine formation
for movement.
The team configures into a 2-by-2 formation with the numbers 1 and 2 men left, and the 3 and 4 men
right. (When clearing a right-hand corner, use the left-handed firing method to minimize exposure.)
The numbers 1 and 3 men move to the edge of the corner and assume a low crouch or kneeling position.
On signal, the numbers 1 and 3 men simultaneously turn left and right, respectively.
At the same time, the numbers 2 and 4 men step forward and turn left and right, respectively maintaining
their (high) position. (Sectors of fire interlock and the low/high positions prevent soldiers from firing at
another.) Once the left and right portions of the hallway are clear, the fire team resumes the movement
formation.
Figure 3-40

Figure 3-41 depicts the fire team's actions upon reaching a hallway "T" intersection when approaching along the cross of
the "T". The fire team is using the serpentine formation for movement.
The team configures into a modified 2-by-2 formation with the numbers 1 and 3 men abreast and toward the right side of
the hall. The number 2 man moves to the left side of the hall and orients to the front, and the number 4 man shifts to the
right side (his left) and maintains rear security. (When clearing a right-hand corner, use the left-handed firing method to
minimize exposure.)
The numbers 1 and 3 men move to the edge of the corner and the number 3 man assumes a low crouch or kneeling
position. On signal, the number 3 man turns right around the corner keeping low, the number 1 man steps forward while
turning to the right and staying high. (Sectors of fire interlock and the low/high positions prevent soldiers from firing at one
another.)
The numbers 2 and 4 men continue to move in the direction of travel. As the number 2 man passes behind the number 1
man, the number 1 man shifts laterally to his left until he reaches the far corner.
The numbers 2 and 4 men continue to move in the direction of travel. As the number 4 man passes behind the number 3
man, the number 3 man shifts laterally to his left until he reaches the far corner. As the number 3 man begins to shift
across the hall, the number 1 man turns into the direction of travel and moves to his position in the formation.
As the numbers 3 and 4 men reach the far side of the hallway, they too assume their original positions in the serpentine
formation, and the fire team continues to move.

I hope you like this information and those of you in L.E. & Military thanks for the asking me to do this. I had a lot of fun. In
the next issue I might do counter ambush and ghillie suite. How to make one or where to buy one.

Lack of Realistic Training in today’s Defensive Knife Courses
Defensive knife tactics are an underrated necessary skill. In today’s world where the criminal is better trained and more
determined than ever before, one must be skilled both physical and mentally to face these new challenges and go home
at the end of each day. In order for someone to acquire these skills, one must seek out and train with instructors which
teach effective, real world defensive techniques. Today’s defensive community is plagued with unrealistic training
techniques as well as unproven training techniques. Many instructors teach techniques which are ineffective in real life
street fights. These techniques are praised upon by the instructors, yet students have no way of determining if these
techniques are really effective. This is extremely dangerous as the student may depend on these skills one day to save
their life, the life of a friend or partner. Techniques that look ‘devastating’ in a dojo, training video or on TV most often do
not work on the streets. Real Attackers are fast, furious, and they are determined to either hurt you, or kill you.
Most trainers pair up students, each knowing when and how to attack. Then, both students move slowly so that each
student has time to move and react. This is great for basic training when understanding the fundamentals is essential;
however, to train for ‘real life survival’, training MUST escalate to unknown, full speed attacks. Most techniques seen
today depend mostly on either fine motor skills, which are seriously depleted when your heart starts racing, or the student
must practice the technique for years to acquire the proficiencies required to perform the technique correctly. Students
must understand that when faced with a Real Attacker, one that actually wants to hurt you, that you must act fast, without
remorse, and the techniques you use must immediately stop the attack. Your heart will be racing, your blood pressure will
increase dramatically, and your body will go through many changes. Some of these changes include; a reduction in your
vision, loss of hearing, and most importantly, your ability to think and manipulate your extremities. Techniques must be
simple, and must be engrained through repetitive practice, both physically and mentally, so if ever attacked, you will
instinctively react, stopping the attack. Proving that techniques are effective is especially true when learning techniques
against edged weapons. Edged weapons are extremely dangerous and applying techniques that don’t work is a tactical
liability, and can get you and others killed. Several years ago I started substituting training knifes for large Crayola
Markers. These markers would leave a mark on the attacked if the defensive technique wasn’t applied correctly. This was
a great way of training, however, the markers were constantly breaking, and wasn’t professional looking, or effective as a
reality based training tool, as markers do not feel or act the same way as a blade. Only the tip of the marker would leave a
mark, where a blade has an edge as well as a point, letting it cut in many directions. I also tried using chalk on the edge of
training knifes, which worked similar to using markers, but the mark was hard to see and needed to be re-applied to the
blades constantly. Then I read an article about Hank Hayes and No Lie Blades, a company which manufactures training
knifes and provides tactical combat training to Military, Law Enforcement and civilians. There training knives use ink or
paint on their felt lined knifes that leaves marks, much like what I was use to. I went to there website at nolieblades.com, I
found it very informative and quite different from many other websites. Their training knifes looked professional, and the
marks that were seen in the article left no doubt that the knife made contact and a defensive technique in fact failed. I
called No Lie Blades and reached Hank Hayes the CEO and ordered two of their ‘Standard Series, Double Edged Knife
kits’. I received the No Lie Blades several days later, along with two instructional knife defense DVD’s and several tubes
of lipstick. That same week I held a Defensive Knife Course. Before class started, I prepped the knives as stated in the
directions. I was extremely impressed with both the quality of the No Lie Blade training knives as well as the incredible
deep red (blood like) mark that these training blades left. There was no doubt when the blade made contact. It was also
possible to clean the felt and use them as regular training knifes without them leaving their mark on the defender.
During class I noticed an immediate change in the student’s attitude as they were amazed with the product as well, and
they simply hated getting marked by them. Several of the students have had defensive knife instruction before, from
another instructor, and realized that they had a lot more to learn than they had previously thought. This made the student
try much harder ‘Not’ to get marked. The students moved faster, and they took training more seriously. The students
seemed to learn the techniques much faster than with previous training blades. The No Lie Blades training knives greatly
enhanced my combat skills and helped provide the immediate proof that the students needed. I have purchased several
more of these training knives from No Lie Blades and use them religiously in my training curriculums. These are high
quality training knifes, easy to use, feels great in the hands and there mark leaves no doubt that they made contact, these
blades DO NOT LIE.
