Scope & Method
 This report forecasts US integral horsepower electric motor demand and shipments inUS dollars at the manufacturers’ level to 2017. Demand is also forecast to 2017 in termsof units. Total demand in dollars is segmented in terms of product by:
 alternating current (AC) motors
 direct current (DC) motors
 hermetic motors.For the purposes of this report, universal motors, which can run on either AC or DCpower, are categorized with DC motors. Total demand is also segmented by market as follows:
 heating and cooling
 household appliances
 aerospace and other transport equipment
 motor vehicles
 other markets such as commercial and service industry equipment. To illustrate historical trends, total demand is provided at five-year intervals for 2002,2007, and 2012, while the various segments and shipments are reported for 2007 and2012. Forecasts emanate from the identification and analysis of pertinent statisticalrelationships and other historical trends/events as well as their expectedprogression/impact over the forecast period. Changes in quantities between reportedyears of a given total or segment are typically provided in terms of five-year compoundannual growth rates (CAGRs). For the sake of brevity, forecasts are generally stated insmoothed CAGR-based descriptions to the forecast year, such as “demand is projectedto rise 3.2% annually through 2017.” The result of any particular year over that period,however, may exhibit volatility and depart from a smoothed, long-term trend, ashistorical data typically illustrate.Key macroeconomic indicators are also provided at five-year intervals with CAGRs forthe years corresponding to other reported figures.
