At
rst glance,Savannah Hope Swandallooks like any other3rd grader at Mt. JulietElementary. She is an outgoing, beautiful,9-year-old little girl with an infectiouslaugh and a smile that will melt your heart. She enjoys beingoutdoors, playing withher family and friends, dancing, singing, riding her bike, listening to music andgoing to church. What makesSavannah unlike herfellow students andclassmates at MJEis the fact that she’s
ghting cancer forthe third time in only3 years. She wasinitially diagnosedin Feb. 2006 at thetender age of 5 withStage IV metastatic alveolarrhabdomyosarcoma. Thistype of childhood cancer isvery rare and aggressive witha poor medical prognosis.Savannah had to undergo10 months of intensechemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation & several surgicalprocedures at VanderbiltChildren’s Hospital inan effort to get rid of thecancer. In January 2007, sheand her family were thrilled when she reached remission. She enjoyed almost 1 ½ years of being cancer-free until she relapsedin April 2008. Surgeryto remove an abdominaltumor was performed anddifferent chemo drugs wereadministered for 10 monthsto try to get rid of the canceragain. Luckily, she wastold she had no evidence of disease in Feb. 2009.Unfortunately, hercancer returned after only8 weeks off treatment. OnApril 6, 2009, she began anew chemo regimen that isgiven for 5 consecutive daysevery 3 weeks. Savannahis unable to go to schoolduring each week of chemoand is homebound when herblood counts are so low thatit is dangerous for her to beout in public.Savannah’simmediate family consistsof her mother and step-father, Robin and BruceLandes, stepsister, AshleyLandes, father and step-mother, John and TaunyaSwandal, step-brother, Joey Fishbeck andhalf-sister, EmmaSwandal. The City of Mt. Juliet’s strict Town CenterOverlay District guidelinesare playing an importantpart in the renovation of abuilding recently purchasedby the City, which willhave to make some majorchanges after constructionon N. Mt. Juliet Road iscompleted in order to keepin compliance.Mt. Juliet Municipal-Regional Planningcommissioners approved Thursday night requestedvariances to the Archerbuilding, located at 2365N. Mt. Juliet Road, withthe conditions that parkingremain the same until theroad construction is
nished, landscaping be applied tothe building once the roadconstruction is
nished, and that it conforms to theOverlay District guidelines if those still exist at the timethe construction is
nished.Planning Commissioner EdHagerty abstained from thevote. The requested variances will be recommended bythe planning commissionto the city commission forapproval. The guidelines arecurrently under review, andcould possibly be removed,by a City committee.“We want to makesure City staff abides by itsown rules,” remarked CityManager Randy Robertsonof the variances.Planningcommissioners approveda major amendment to theFinal Master DevelopmentPlan for the Paddocksdevelopment on N. Mt. JulietRoad, which included arequest to increase signagesquare footage per sigh andnumber of signs on the frontfaçade for the Wal-Mart andLowe’s building. The issuecentered around changesmade to the City signordinance, which decreasedthe size of a sign late last year. The size of a sign correlatesto the square footage of thebuilding, and the proposedsignage for Lowe’s wouldbe too small for the size of the building under the newsign ordinance. The originalsignage for Lowe’s wasapproved at the February2007 planning commissionmeeting, according torepresentatives, and the newdimensions submitted are“consistent with the spirit of  your sign ordinance.”The majoramendment was approvedby the commission as apositive recommendationto the city commission, with Hagerty and PlanningCommissioner Lori Landryvoting against it.Review of the FinalPlat for the Mabry property, located on Lebanon Road, was approved. Also approved was the Site Plan for the BondMemorial Chapel located at1098 Weston drive.Planningcommissioners unanimouslyapproved for a positiverecommendation to thecity commission a textamendment to the CityZoning Ordinance regardingsidewalk signs outside theright of way.Lebanon attorney Jere McCulloch, representingthe developers Bel Air atBeckwith, requested a work session to meet withCity staff and work on apreliminary plat and PUDfor approval.
