College may not be in session over the summer months, but learning at Messiah doesn’t come to a standstill rommid-May to late August. During the months when manystudents and educators get a much-welcomed break romthe demands o the academic semesters, there’s no hiatusin Messiah’s community engagement and quality edu-cational programs. Among this year’s summer learningopportunities oered by the College are:
Summer Academy
At Messiah’s Summer Academy, local students who havecompleted grades 6–11 can learn in a collegiate-level,un-lled environment through hands-on activities. “Mygoal or each student is to become inspired by some newopportunity or perspective that broadens their perceptiono a topic, talent, or viewpoint,” says academy directorBeckie Lacey, the gited support teacher at MechanicsburgMiddle School. Classes, which are held on campus andare taught by Messiah aculty, include topics such as FieldSchool in Archaeology, Engineering Design: Rockets, and We Are What We Eat: Food in Literature and Film.

Twelve di-erent sports camps will be oered on Messiah’s campusthis summer. “Throughout our camp, we instill many o the same principles and values that (ormer head coach)Dave Brandt created to provide a meaningul oundationor our Messiah men’s soccer team,” says boys’ socceracademy director and head men’s soccer coach BradMcCarty. “These values range rom ‘team over individual’to ‘we choose to be positive’ to ‘we nish strong.’”
Music
The intensive chamber music program and compositionworkshop is designed to provide an environment ormusically gited students age 16 and older to enhancetheir perormance and composition abilities throughpersonal coaching, master classes, and a public recital atthe conclusion o the camp. Students participating in thecomposition workshop will write, critique, and superviserehearsals or their own works, with at least one workselected to be perormed by the Mendelssohn Piano Trio.
Online Classes
Also returning this year is the online summer session, where students can earn academic credit by interactingwith classmates and aculty through online classes thattake nearly hal the time o a traditional semester course.Online summer classes allow students to “plug in” any-where, at their own pace while still receiving personalizedinstruction rom Messiah aculty.

On June 9, 1911, an eager group o studentscaught their rst glimpse o the new homeo Messiah College (which was then calledMessiah Bible School and Missionary Train-ing Home). The students rode the trainrom the ormer campus in Harrisburg tovisit the tiny village o Grantham. At thetime, Grantham included little more than amill, the Smith and Co. noodle actory, andthe Grantham National Bank. Ater touring the site o the uturecampus, the students laid a ew bricks tobuild what is now Old Main and endedtheir day with dinner at the home o Samueland Elizabeth Smith, the couple whodonated the Grantham land to the school.George Haagan captured theCollege’s move in this excerpt rom hispoem “Grantham” that ran in the schoolnewspaper:
Thou hast been wooing us we know it so wellThou hast been calling we did hear the tellO nice broad meadows with hedges and tree; And a laughing brook e’er singing with glee.

Leading man plays the role of a public servant
Artistic director discovers commonalities among players in the world’s human drama
“Theatre, at its heart, is an act o giving,” says Jesse Baxter ’02 Messiah theatre grad (picturedhere, let). In 2006, he started Dramatic Adventure Theatre (DAT), a theatre company thatocuses on giving a voice to those who are typically not heard. Working in Zimbabwe in the summer o 2007, Baxter and his colleagues collaboratedwith local theatre proessionals to lead playwriting and acting workshops or dierentvillages and cities. Ultimately, they produced a play written mostly by the children in thecountry’s ravaged by poverty and AIDS. When the cast o DAT returned to the States andperormed the show in New York, audiences expected to see Arican dancing and drumming.“What they saw,” says Baxter, “were refections o themselves.” The stories the children o Zimbabwe told were the same kinds o things that American kids experience — a rst crush, the day a parent died. “It was the same story with a very dierent backdrop,” Baxter says. At DAT, actors break out o the sel-centered world o theater and lm in the U.S. andemploy the theatrical arts as a way to empower disenranchised communities around theworld.
