1. The Center for Multiculturalism
The Center for Multiculturalism is a non-political, non-government and non-profitassociation of citizens founded in Novi Sad in 1998.Its main goals and objectives are to promote and enhance multiculturalism, socialtolerance and exchange of ideas and opinions, to nourish, study, promote and enhance themulticultural character of the Yugoslav society; to exercise recognition of the nationalidentity of the Yugoslav citizens and establish universal principles of tolerance amongdifferent nationalities.The Center for Multiculturalism publishes the magazine “
 Habitus
” as well as the
 Newsletters
on the cultural activities of the minorities in Vojvodina.”
 
It also organizesdifferent panels related to education with the lecturers from Hungary, Slovakia, Romaniaand Slovenia. It is preparing a draft version of the Law on rights of ethnic minorities oneducation in Autonomous Province of Vojvodina within the project

2. The Project

By means of its project “
The Issues related to Education of Ethnic Minorities
”, theCenter for Multiculturalism intends to enhance primary and secondary school educationof the minorities aiming to improve and maintain the common feeling of communionamong the people living in the Province of Vojvodina which is a representative sample of the multicultural environment. The main objective of this project is to promotemulticultural communion in Vojvodina through developing closer ties and cooperation between
 
the representatives and the teaching staff of the majority group and minorities inthe field of education, in government and non-government organizations in the FR Yugoslavia, as well as the exchange of knowledge related to education system of minorities
 
in surrounding countries and Vojvodina.

3. On project (more detailed)
Realization of the project began in December 2000, with intention to achieve thefollowing, by mid June 2001:1. Draft Law on the rights to school education of ethnic minorities in the Province of Vojvodina, composed by team of experts, which will be submitted, upon it's finalization,to competent authorities of the Province and the Republic.2. Two Round Table discussions during which representatives of political parties,relevant organizations, cultural and expert institutions of minorities will contribute their own suggestions.3. Four Panels with representatives from Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, in purpose of presenting certain models and resolutions of problems of ethnic minorityeducation in these countries to pedagogues and teachers from Vojvodina and togovernment and NGO representativesIn the course of realization of the project, according to the above presented plan, up tonow, the first draft version of the Law on rights of ethnic minorities to school educationin Vojvodina was made by the team of experts and then elaborated in the Round Tablediscussion by experts in the field of collective rights of ethnic minorities, representativesof political parties, relevant organizations and cultural institutions of minorities. InFebruary, the first Panel took place, with experts on issues of ethnic minorities fromHungary and then in March, the second Panel, with guests from Romania and in April theThird Panel with experts from Slovak Republic.
