Mirrors or Shiny Objects
On a sunny day, a mirror is your bestsignaling device. If you don't have amirror, polish your canteen cup, your belt buckle, or a similar object that willreflect the sun's rays. Direct the flashesin one area so that they are secure fromenemy observation. Practice using amirror or shiny object for signaling now;do not wait until you need it.Haze, ground fog, and mirages maymake it hard for a pilot to spot signalsfrom a flashing object. So, if possible, getto the highest point in your area whensignaling. If you can't determine theaircraft's location, flash your signal in thedirection of the aircraft noise. Pilotshave reported seeing mirror flashes upto 160 kilometers away under idealconditions. Figures 19-4 and 19-5 showmethods of aiming a signal mirror for signaling.
