Solar Purchasing Program Comes To L.A. CountyResidents and businesses in Los Angeles County can go online startingtoday to determine if solar panels would work well on their properties. The new solar mapping program -- available at solarmap.lacounty.gov --calculates the suitability of solar panels for a given property by computingthe roof size, angle, shade from nearby trees, and other factors. All the user has to input is an address."Solar makes sense in Los Angeles and in Southern California," saidSupervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. "This is one of the capitals of sunshine on theglobe."The county program is the world's largest solar map in terms of geographicarea, covering 3,000 square miles, according to Acting Chief InformationOfficer Richard Sanchez.Sanchez's department and the county's Internal Services Department workedtogether to develop the Web site, at a cost of $93,500.Still, despite the free tool and the lure of renewable energy, the up-front costof installing solar panels could still deter some.Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said that "in a time of economic crises, our green strategies must also be cost-effective. While the solar map is a tool inour collective quest to become more informed and empowered about how tolive greener lives, it is important that such renewable energy upgrades areaccomplished without breaking the bank."The cost of installing solar panels varies, depending in large part on howmany panels are needed and what sort of system is used.
