SunRun Expands 'Solar-As-A-Service' No matter how you slice it, putting solar panels on your roof is expensive.Try $30,000 or more, before rebates.A number of companies are working on ways to reduce the cost of residential solar. One, San Francisco-based SunRun, seems to have hit asweet spot. Going through SunRun, homeowners can pay as little as $1,000to get panels put on their roof--a significant discount to other solar options. But here's the twist: SunRun owns the panels on your roof; you sign an 18-year agreement with SunRun to lock in your electricity costs and pay thecompany for the electricity generated by the panels. This is called a power purchase agreement, in which the homeowner agreesto buy the solar power generated on her roof at a fixed rate (the rate mayincrease a bit over time). The idea is that as electricity costs charged byutilities rise (they tend to increase about 4% a year), the SunRun customer will be paying less and less than she would have otherwise.Customers immediately see 5% to 20% savings on their monthly electric bill, according to SunRun. Bill Lucoff, a SunRun customer in El Cerrito,Calif., says he's seen even bigger savings. "Over the past six months, I'vegenerated a little more power than I've used," says Lucoff. When his utility bill comes, the electricity portion of the bill is zero.Companies like MMA Renewable Ventures and SunEdison have beendeploying power purchase agreements with corporate customers like Macy's( M - news - people ), Gap ( GPS - news - people ) and Kohl's ( KSS - news- people ) for several years. SunRun claims it's the first one to offer suchagreements, called PPAs, to residential customers.Key to these power purchase agreements is getting the financing to buy the panels--and then getting an investor (often a bank) to take over the

ownership of the panels in order to get federal tax credit and any state-levelrebates or other credits that come with owning the solar panels.SunRun raised $105 million from US Bancorp ( USB - news - people ) lastOctober. With the money, SunRun has funds to buy and install 2,500residential systems this year, says President Lynn Jurich. She wouldn't saywhether SunRun is profitable or what its revenues are, but she says thecompany, which launched in September 2007, expects revenues to grow150% this year over last year.A big step toward that growth is an expansion of SunRun's operatingterritory. The company is announcing Tuesday that it is partnering with twosolar installers in Massachusetts. SunRun has already partnered with six of the 10 largest installers in California and is working with solar installers inArizona.Download Solar Panel Do-it-yourself GuideGoogle searches: Download USA Solar Panel Construction Guide, Do-it-yourself Guide.
