In 2004, when South Arica was awarded the bid to host the 2010

, there were celebra-tions throughout South Arica and the Arican continent. The decision to awardthe bid to Arica or the frst time is celebrated not only because o the conti-nent’s love o the game – but also because it is part o Arica’s journey into acentury o growth and development.The words “Ke Nako” in the 2010 World Cup ofcial slogan means “its time”in the South Arican languages Sesotho and Setswana. The slogan is a call tocelebrate Arica as the origin o humanity and as a contributor to every sphereo human endeavour.The South Arican Government is committed to making the event “the bestWorld Cup ever”, and will deliver on all the commitments to FIFA. Governmentis also using the hosting o the World Cup to contribute to the growth anddevelopment o the country.The excitement is palpable – every day, in anticipation o the frst “Arican”World Cup, new and exciting steps are being taken on the journey to 2010.Come and be part o the legacy!
African World Cup
In May 2004, FIFA awarded the hosting o the FIFA World Cup to an Aricancountry or the frst time in the 101 years o FIFA’s existence. As the host,South Arica stands not as a country alone – but rather as a representative o Arica and as part o an Arican amily o nations.The Arican Union (AU) has committed its support to the 2010 World Cup. In adeclaration o the eighth Assembly o the AU heads o state and government,the AU reafrmed its pledge to make 2010 a truly Arican tournament, com-mitting its countries to “ull and substantive involvement in the preparationsleading to the 2010 World Cup”.The South Arican Government is collaborating with Arican countries on anumber o projects that will contribute to the Arican legacy. These all in theareas o:
• peace and nation-building• football support and development• environment and tourism• culture and heritage• communication• information and communications technology (ICT)• continental security co-operation.
