Star Trek – Second Chances

Vulcan daylight had arrived only minutes earlier when young Tylok enteredthe Vulcan sanctuary where Admiral James T. Kirk and the former crew of theEnterprise were staying. Before he could knock upon Kirk's door however, heaccidentally overheard voices from inside the quarters."I need to speak with Ambassador Sarek. This is very important..."It was early morning but the Vulcan sun was already shining bright. Tylok, asusual, arrived exactly on time to escort the human guests to a nearby cafe` forbreakfast. He was not one for what the humans call "eavesdropping" but thesubject on the other side of the wooden door caught his attention.Sarek's assistant at the other end of the video feed seemed to care verylittle about Kirk's request. "Ambassador Sarek left Vulcan this morning for ameeting on Delta IV... He will not be back for at least three days..."Kirk sighed at the response, but he was not about to give up just yet."I need a ship for several days... Is there a chance that your office couldhelp me in obtaining one?" Kirk could barely finish his last sentence beforethe young female Vulcan responded. "I cannot authorize such a thing..."The Admiral turned off the communications device in disgust and turned todepart the room. He knew that in some fashion he would find a ship one way oranother. He opened the door and standing before him was the young Vulcan hecame to know as Tylok. The Vulcan male was in his early twenties. He was slightly shorter thanKirk, had deep green eyes and jet-black hair. He was dressed in a dark grayoutfit, which to the Admiral looked very bland, even by Vulcan standards. Kirkknew that Tylok was not there to impress anyone with his fashion sense however, and had academic objectives as his ultimate goal.Kirk looked to him. "I'll not be joining you and the others forbreakfast today Tylok...""Admiral, I overheard that you were looking for a ship..."Kirk walked by Tylok and down the jagged rock floored hall. "I'm going tobe leaving Vulcan for several days..."Tylok stayed close behind him. "I can get you a ship sir..."Kirk immediately stopped and turned to face him. "You can? How? Ididn't know there were many Vulcans of your age who had their own ship...""I did not say that it was my ship sir... I only stated that I can getyou a ship..."Kirk smiled and looked down upon the shorter Vulcan. "Who from?""I have special permission to use one of the Academy's shuttles if needbe..."Kirk pushed opened the exterior door and his eyes were immediately caughtin the bright Vulcan sun. He moved towards a dusty path that led to a barrenvalley where their recently acquired Klingon bird of prey awaited repair.

"I have the unique ability at getting people into a great deal of trouble, especially as of late. I think it would be best if you let me take care ofthis on my own..."Tylok was not ready to give up. "But I wish to help you... Myassignment is to study you, to watch and learn. This is the perfectopportunity to do such a thing..."Kirk slightly smiled. "I appreciate your desire to learn by me Tylok, but what I'm about to do could get you in a great deal of trouble, let alonepossibly killed..."There was a short pause until Tylok broke the awkward silence. "Althoughit is not something that I am accustomed to doing, I have a presumption aboutwhat you are planning to do."Kirk stopped dead in his tracks and turned to face the Vulcan. "What areyou talking about?"Tylok continued. "If my studies of you have taught me anything, it isthat you follow your own rules and your own beliefs. Past events in yourcareer suggest you have the ability to change things. If you are not yetreturning to Earth to stand trial then I can only assume your departure hassome sort of connection with your deceased son."The young Vulcan had for some reason taken to Admiral Kirk, and this wasa mystery to both Kirk and Tylok's professors at the Vulcan Science Academy.Tylok's assignment was to find what the humans would call a "role model",someone to look up to and admire, but no one had expected Tylok to choose anactual human, especially James Kirk himself.Tylok's professors did not object, and found the move to be mostinteresting, even though a bit illogical. Observing with a scrutinizing eye, they allowed it, realizing Tylok was still quite young and still had a greatdeal to learn. As they saw it, Kirk would soon be gone, and no life longdamage could be done to the boy.Sweat was slowly trickling down the side of Kirk's face. The Vulcan heatwas as intense as it always was, but the thought that the young Vulcan had justfigured out what he was planning made him slightly uncomfortable and even a bitnervous. "If you've come to this conclusion Tylok, I'm guessing you have atheory as to what I plan to do."Tylok did not hesitate to tell him. "I believe that you plan to travelback in time to prevent his murder."Kirk turned back to the pathway and continued towards the Klingon ship."Time travel... I'm guessing you know of my experiences with time travel...""I know each and every detail of every mission you have logged withStarfleet..."Again Kirk smiled. "I'm impressed... I didn't realize you went to suchextremes to study me..."

"It is all part of my assignment Admiral..." The heat seemed to botherthe Vulcan very little as they continued to kick up the dusty path."So I guess you've concluded that such a mission is illogical?" Kirkdecided to test the Vulcan.Tylok hesitated only slightly. "Perhaps I would have before...""So what changed your mind?" asked Kirk. The two were now walking along the edge of a canyon, and far below themwere several Vulcan shuttles. Again Tylok spoke. "When you returned CaptainSpock to Vulcan I knew that some of things I believed needed to be altered..."Kirk was interested. "What things?""Primarily the belief that the needs of the many outweigh the needs ofthe few...""You no longer believe this?" asked Kirk."I still understand the logic behind such a statement, but under somecircumstances I believe the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many..."Kirk squinted his eyes as he tried to look at Tylok through the brightsunlight. "So the mission I have committed myself to is logical?""It is your son... You have the ability to save him."Tylok moved to the canyon's edge. "I can arrange for us to take one ofthose shuttles..." He pointed to three small vessels fueling below as Kirkwalked to his side. The Admiral was hesitant to speak because he was still notconvinced that he should bring the young Vulcan with him. It was only a shorttime ago that he dragged the entire bridge crew of the Enterprise into amission that still may cost them their careers and maybe even their freedom."You still are not sure if you want me to go with you, are you?" askedTylok.Kirk crossed his arms and looked to the young Vulcan. "Alright... Youcan come with me, but if any trouble arises I want it understood that all ofthe responsibility for everything that happens is mine... Are we inagreement?""Clearly..." replied Tylok.A small but nervous smile crossed the Admiral's face. "I can't get intoanymore trouble than I'm already in..." Kirk whispered beneath his breath.Night had fallen over the valley and the former crew of the Enterprisegathered under the stars for relaxation, rest and even some reflection. TheVulcan winds were cool now, but it felt soothing to the human crew who had beenworking all day on the Klingon ship. They circled a small fire Chekov hadstarted and sat upon the dusty ground.Tylok stepped into the fire's light. He dropped a container he wascarrying down upon the ground and opened its lid to reveal it contents. Kirk
