400-year Event to a Man of Legend, Sir Hugh Myddelton .

A unique joyous event occurred last week, when a great Welshman Sir Hugh Myddelton (c.15601631) Bart., was honoured by the Rev. R. Williams of Bow Street Aberystwyth holding a short service in memory of Sir Hugh and his mineworkers, at the remains of a chapel that he built for his workmen at Cwmsymlog Silver mine, in the depths of a hidden scenic Welsh valley. After which on the presumed altar, an honoured guest given a bouquet of white flowers to lay in their memory. An individual event that will be hopefully repeated in 2017 for all those that missed it. The event part of weekend celebrations entitled In Myddeltons Footsteps (Visiting the Mines of Sir Hugh), on Sat. 25th May with organised tours of Cwmsymlog Mine (guided by Nigel Chapman) and the Darren Mines (guided by Simon Timberlake), and evening talks in Llanbadarn Village Hall by David Sables of Lampeter University, Graham Levins (Sec. WMPT), and Simon Timberlake (Early Mines Research Group & WMPT); and on Sun. 26th May, Bronfloyd Mine (guided by Simon Timberlake), Cwmerfyn Mine (guided by Robert Ireland) and Goginan Mine (guided by Graham Levins). Thanks to the organisers Graham Levins, Secretary of the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust (WMPT), and sponsorship from Royal Commission for Ancient and Historic Monuments of Wales Metal Links Project, Samantha Jones for funding and arranging a minibus (and Peter White the driver), and toilet facilities etc. And as with the service above, thanks to God for giving us two glorious sunny days! By Mike Kensey, a guest from Hertfordshire, who attended the Heritage Weekend.
