What is Web 2.0?
Web 2.0 is a term originally coined by Silicon Valley publisher Tim O’Reilly in 2005 to describe a shift in the World Wide Web.In terms of design, the webessentially shifted from static pagesto collaborative ones driven by participatory media. Content for thisnew read/write web is generated by users who now are able to create, remix and publish using new technologies. The web has become a more interactive and egalitarianplace because anyone literally canparticipate. However, because of thisshift, it also has become a place wherepeople need to judge content with a  very critical eye. New media literacies are required in order tofilter this gamut of information.Examples of sites that incorporate Web 2.0 principles are Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, and Facebook. They allow for the efficient communicationof ideas, photos, video, and links. Why should these tools matter toeducators? Here are a few reasons:1. Your students are mostly likely already engaged with these tools.Motivate your students by exploring how thesetools can beapplied to teaching and learning.2. The collaborative andcommunicative nature of Web 2.0resources reinforces skills studentsneed for 21st century living.3. Students and educators canaccess and leverage volumes of high quality information andresources.
