A Way to Wonder Together
Two of Winona Health’s Chaplains,KathyRedigandBill Flesch, come to Adith Miller
Manor and Roger Metz Manor every Mondayand lead a program with the residents calledGodly Play.It is a wonderful way for the Chaplains, a.k.a.storytellers, to tell the stories of our faith.“Godly Play” is a term coined by JeromeBerryman to describe an approach to anindividual’s spiritual information that is basedon creating a sacred space in which topresent the stories of our faith, wonder aboutthem together, and then allow the residentsopen-ended opportunities, usually with visualaides, to engage the story on their own terms. The stories are told very simply, with simpleprops, and without interpretation or moralinstruction. After a story is presented, theresidents and the storyteller wonder togetherabout aspects of the story that draw theirinterest. This is play. It is Godly. Our faithstories are very powerful and off plenty tothink about even without our elaboration onwhat they “mean”.Godly Play is a popular program with theresidents and very well attended. Residentssit around the table and engage in sharingstories, thoughts and laughter. Godly Playhas been an important addition to the activityprogram-ming atAMM andRMM.
