Christopher
McGinley,
Ed.D.
Superintendent
of
Schools
June
3,
2013
Dear
Parents/Guardians:

Earlier
today,
the
Curriculum
Committee
of
the
Board
concluded
its
final
meeting
of
the
school
year.
At
the
meeting,
the
Committee
continued
its
discussion
of
the
administration's
proposal
to
move
elementary
schedules
to
a
six
day
cycle
beginning
in
September.
After
a
great
deal
of
thoughtful
dialogue
and
after
expressing
appreciation
to
the
individuals
involved
in
developing
the
proposal,
the
Committee
recommended
a
period
of
additional
study
and
deliberation.

Specifically,
the
Committee
requested
that
the
administration
facilitate
a
broader
committee,
including
parents
and
teachers,
to
review
the
elementary
schedule.
In
September,
the
administration
will
develop
a
formal
proposal
for
this
process
in
consultation
with
our
Curriculum,
Instruction
and
Professional
Development
Council.
We
hope
to
begin
work
on
forming
the
broader
committee
in
November
with
a
goal
of
making
a
recommendation
to
the
Curriculum
Committee
in
February.

We
are
reviewing
the
elementary
schedule
as
part
of
an
effort
to
address
fundamental
issues
impacting
our
instructional
program.
A
more
effective
schedule
can
help
provide
greater
continuity
in
the
school
day,
limit
interruptions
for
classroom
teachers,
and
enable
better
delivery
of
core
subject
areas.
The
goal
is
to
enhance
the
educational
experience
in
our
schools
and
improve
achievement
for
all
students.

For
the
upcoming
school
year,
all
elementary
schools
will
continue
with
a
five
day
cycle.
Specials
and
FLES
will
continue
under
our
current
model.
The
administration
will
work
to
move
the
start
time
of
the
elementary
day
to
9:00
AM.
The
administration
will
provide
guidance
to
limit
the
time
spent
each
day
in
morning
meeting.

Each
school
principal
will
work
to
create
dedicated
blocks
of
time
for
students
to
receive
enrichment
and
support
services
that
do
not
interfere
with
core
instructional
time,
consistent
with
the
goals
of
the
"WIN"
(What
I
Need)
time
model.

I
want
to
close
by
thanking
everyone
who
has
contributed
to
the
conversation
about
how
we
can
best
support
our
elementary
children
through
our
instructional
program.
The
conversation
has
at
times
been
difficult
because
we
all
care
deeply
about
these
issues
and
want
the
very
best
for
the
children.

I
appreciate
the
time
that
the
Board
has
given
to
this
issue
by
scheduling
additional
meetings
so
that
all
voices
could
be
heard.

For
now
our
focus
turns
to
concluding
this
school
year
successfully
and
preparing
our
schools
for
a
great
start
in
September.

We
will
also
spend
time
reviewing
the
input
that
we
have
received
to
date
and
we
will
provide
an
update
in
the
fall
regarding
this
matter.

Sincerely,
Christopher
McGinley,
Ed.D.
Superintendent
