Director's statement
When I was a child, I often served on the altar. I looked with curiosity at the chalice that
rose towards the sky during the consecration and I was surprised that the wine my father
drunk every evening and that he gave to the parish priest on Sunday morning, could with a
magic formula become blood, like this, in the twinkling of an eye. I sometimes had doubts,
but then, feeling very guilty for that, I repented immediately, so that the priest, in spite of
his old age and his infirmities, kept having something mysterious and powerful that made
him different and better than the others. Year after year, my small doubt was no longer
followed by a repentance and for a long time, for a matter of pride, I kept away from
churches.
Nevertheless I kept inside me, in spite of my irreverent scepticism, a kind of benevolence
towards men and women who consecrated and still consecrate their lives to God, no
matter what confession they belong to. People who have faith are gifted with something
elusive, shifty, a kind of spiritual obstinacy, a sort of placid “unreasonableness” that make
them, somehow, poetic and fascinating, similar to lonely Don Quixote of modernity.
This is the way my eyes looked at Father Filippo, a young and restless parish priest of
some remote and outlying villages of Abruzzi Apennines. In the loneliness of the mountain
landscape, sharing his experience was for me an opportunity not only to think one more
time about the great issues pertaining to faith, but also to investigate the condition of men
who put themselves in front of the Divine Mystery with their own contradictions and
anxieties and then mould their existence according to these beliefs. In the background, the
mountain, the “Gran Sasso d’italia” which represents the powerful and undecipherable
image of that Mystery, timeless monument of His co-presence, place of the soul where
men rediscover themselves as fragile fibres of the universe. At the end my relationship
with God continued to be intermittent and indecipherable but sometimes, in those ancient
and nearly deserted churches, in the moving chant of the old women, I felt a thrill shaking
me inside and those times, surprisingly, I saw my cold and arrogant rationality staggering.
