now for the free lessons. The piano has always been a great instrument and many composers use it as themain instrument for their musical works. The piano is a stringed keyboard musical instrument that inspires us all, when wesee pianists playing gracefully we all wish we could play like that, it is derivedfrom the harpsichord and clavichord. The piano is an instrument played by themeans of a keyboard, when the keys are depressed they strike steel strings withfelt hammers and this produces the sound. The hammers then immediatelyrebound allowing the strings to continue vibrating and these vibrations aretransmitted through a bridge to a soundboard that amplifies them so the notescan be heard. The intensity of the sound can be altered by the stronger or weakertouch of the fingers on the keys. The name piano is derived from a shortened form of the word pianoforte, which isseldom used today except in formal language, from the original Italian name forthe instrument gravicembalo col pian e forte (literally meaning harpsichord withsoft and loud). The earliest known model was built by Batolomeo Cristofori amaker of harpsichords in Florence Italy in the early seventeen hundreds but thereare some indications that prototypes were built in the later half of the sixteenhundreds. There are pianos that have survived from those days and are dated toaround 1720.Cristofori himself an expert harpsichord maker began to design his pianomechanism and unlike the harpsichord whose tangents stay in contact with thestrings the piano needed a mechanism where the hammers must strike the stringbut not remain in contact with them and return to their rest position withoutbouncing when repeated keys were pressed quickly. The next progression camefrom German organ maker Gottfried Silbermann, Silbermann invented theforerunner of the modern damper pedal which lifts all the dampers from thestrings at once. Perhaps the most notable improvement came from JohannAndreas Stien working in Geramny who is credited with the invention of animproved escapement. Englishman John Broadwood had a company who alreadyhad a reputation for its harpsichords and began to construct instruments thatwere progressively larger, louder, and more robust resembling the modern daypiano. He also began to build them with more octaves increasing to six octaves by1810. The French maker Sebastien Erard created the double escapement actionwhich allowed a note to be repeated even if the key had not yet risen to itsmaximum vertical position and this facilitated rapid playing. The piano continued to evolve with the plate the iron frame that sits atop thesoundboard and the use of felt hammer coverings instead of layered leatherhammers and of course the increase of octaves to 7/2 and sometimes even more. The modern piano owes its appreance, build and quality to those early makersand even with technology advancing as fast as it is there is no real substitute fora grand piano.Digital technology makes it possible to reproduce the piano sound on a portablebasis with modern electronic keyboards being light and easy to carry around, it isalso possible to play them anywhere and plug in earphones so one near can hearthe sound. Of course the modern digital piano can record as well as play andallows for the storage of other sounds and compositions from other instuments. There are extreemly popular with modern musicians and can be a good way to
