Preparing For Times of Disaster

The recent catastrophic tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, reminds us that natural disasters are possible any time of the year. While we hope to never again see widespread destruction and death like we experienced in north Alabama in 2011, or with Hurricane Katrina or Ivan, we cannot assume disasters will not come. It is not a matter of if but rather when. Likelihood of severe weather, the forecast of hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico or tornadoes is not the time to think about serving in disaster relief. That time is NOW, so when the need arises, you are prepared to serve and effectively demonstrate the love of Jesus when you do. In the same way, personal and family preparedness does not need to wait until a disaster is pending. Families can be prepared well ahead of time when disaster strikes. Southern Baptists and Alabama Baptists are champions of disaster relief. However, many of those trained years ago have passed away or aged out of being able to serve. We need trained individuals who can respond to the call-out to serve on a team from our association or district. Spontaneous Untrained Volunteers (SUVs) show up after disasters because they are compassionate and want to help. But non-credentialed volunteers are not allowed in secured areas by EMA and local law enforcement officials. Southern Baptists record of response and outstanding history of training make our volunteers a welcome sight. All Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are trained, background checked, and credentialed so they can serve in times of need.
