June 6, 2013 – Oral Testimony
Chairman Bishop and Members of the Subcommittee on Public Lands andEnvironmental Regulations, I am Reverend Daren C. Jaime, Pastor, People’sAfrican Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Syracuse, New York andMember, Board of Directors, Harriet Tubman Home, Inc., Auburn, NewYork. I am pleased to be here this morning in support of H.R. 664, the"Harriet Tubman National Historical Parks Act"The Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. (HTH) an independent not for profitorganization was established by the African Methodist Episcopal ZionChurch (AME Zion Church), known historically as the “Freedom Church”,to manage and operate the home site in Auburn, NY of Harriet AramintaRoss Tubman Davis known during her lifetime and throughout the world asHarriet Tubman, the “Moses of her People”. In addition to Harriet Tubman,The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the Freedom Church
includes well known freedom seekers, in the annals of its membership -Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. The Harriet Tubman Home, AME Zion Church and the varied publics thatsupport Tubman have never tired nor wavered in seeking “NationalHistorical Site” status for the Harriet Tubman Home site in Auburn, NewYork. We especially thank Rep. Dan Maffei and the co-sponsors of H.R.664. And we thank Rep. Hanna for his steadfast support of the Auburn, NYTubman Home site. The AME Zion Church and the HTH wholeheartedly and withoutreservation supports H.R. 664. Indeed we have waited many long days andnights for this time to come. The work before the subcommittee regardinghonoring the legacy and life of Harriet Tubman will be transformational, it isno small matter. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the death of Harriet Tubman, who died on March 10, 1913 in Auburn, NY. We havespecial gratitude for this subcommittee, as it is prophetic, that freedomloving people around the globe, Tubman aficionados and historians alikewill write and forever remember, whether by planning or coincidence thatthe legislative process calendared this hearing in the wake of 100 year
commemorative anniversary Harriet Tubman events in New York andMaryland. The component parts of H.R. 664 will establish NationalHistorical Parks in a dynamic manner in Auburn and Maryland that ensuresthat future generations will have benefit of knowing the iconic and belovedHarriet Tubman who from the most humble beginnings, believed in thefundamental promise of America and helped to reshape the nation and weare the better for her.I would like to emphasize the following points in support of establishing theTubman National Historical Park in Auburn, NY1.
Adding the Tubman Home to the National Park System will provideadditional opportunities to educate visitors about these crucialmovements in American history.According to conservative estimates based upon similar nationalparks' attendance and the significance of the Tubman Home, attendance would increase by at least 10,000 to 20,000 if the homewere to be operated and promoted by the National Parks Service. The Cayuga County Office of Tourism estimates that visitors to theregion spend an average of $312 per day of their visit. This translatesinto an increase in tourism spending of approximately $3.12 millionannually if the Tubman Home becomes a national park. Thisincrease in spending would support approximately 70 new jobs plus.Additionally, the new Hilton Garden Inn Auburn began operation July24, 2012 to accommodate the increase of visitors to the region.
