Candice Lucas Officially Launches Campaign for School Board

Candice Lucas formally launched her campaign for Rochester City School Board Wednesday. Against the back drop of the Highland Library, with students from the Frederick Douglass Club at James P.B. Duffy School No. 12, chanting Run, Candice, Run, Lucas promised to work hard to positively affect the policies that impact children in the district. We have too many families that are feeling shut out by the district, that are feeling as though their voices arent heard, that are feeling as though no one cares about them and whether or not their children succeed, Lucas said. Thats the reason Im running for School Board, because I want people to knowparents to knowthat someone does care, because I care. Lucas received the Democratic Party designation earlier in the month beating out Commissioner Cynthia Elliot. According to unofficial reports this is the first time a newcomer has won the party support for a school board seat over an incumbent. Commissioners Jose Cruz and Van White also received Democratic Party designation. At the event, Ms. Lucas received an endorsement from Shirley Thompson, former School Board Commissioner. (Candice has) The right attitude. To work with her colleagues in a constructive way to make the kind of improvements she has been talking about and we as a community know are needed. Im hoping that the community will see the wisdom of putting her in office come November, Thompson said. Community and political activist Kenneth Preston said, Shes had actually 11 years of involvement in the school district, so shes been around for a while. Her kids are still attending school in the district and shes actively involved and one of the reasons why she wants to run for office. To make change, to make long lasting change you have to start at the bottom, Preston said. Running for school board here is one of the

Candice Lucas positions of government that is most close to the people. Candice by running for this position and hopefully winning this position will be able to make that change I know that Candice will work as hard as she to bring about change and correct some of things that she and others feel need to be corrected in order to have the district move forward in a comprehensive way. Candice is a hard worker and she speaks from the heart. Lucas spoke of the choice she made to study in Rochester, live in the city and to raise her family here. She spoke of her choice to send her children to Rochester Public schools, given her many options. She spoke of her decades worth of involvement in the district, including: volunteering in the classroom, PTA Treasurer, school based planning team member, and serving as the parent representative on multiple district committees. In her closing remarks, Ms. Lucas underscored her commitment to work on changing the culture of the district to make it family and student friendly, assured the supporters that she would hold the district accountable for improved results and asked the crowd to hold her accountable to her words. I, like far too many other families, had to make that tough decision of where to send my children to school, said Lucas. But I chose to leave them in this district because I believe in the district. This district can do better, and if Im elected to the School Board, it will do better.

Mayor Richards Launches Re-election Campaign

Rochester Mayor Tom Richards officially launched his re-election campaign Saturday. Surrounded by supporters at the Dr. Walter Cooper Academy School #10 Richards pledged a relentless pursuit of investing in development in the entire city, from Midtown to College Town, to our neighborhoods and spoke of the need to focus on fiscal stability so that Rochester provides opportunities for all of our citizens to prosper. I am here in this great neighborhood, in a great part of our city and in front of this school to make the case that we are indeed a city in transformation, said Richards. I humbly ask your support in seeing that transformation through. Joined by Dr. Walter Cooper, for whom the school is named, he stressed the schools motto, Where we never give up! It is a symbol for the City of Rochester as a whole. City Councilwoman Jackie Ortiz spoke in support of Richards for another term pointing out the increased investment in neighborhoods throughout the city from El Camino Estates to Conkey Avenue, I am here to say that Tom Richards has shown great leadership in working to improve every corner of Rochester. Democrats Call on Brooks to Cooperate with Criminal Probe of Favortism

Local democrats are calling on Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks to cooperate with authorities investigating allegations of favoritism in the awarding of a contract to upgrade the countys public safety and security systems. The concern, being investigated by the state Attorney Generals Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is that Navietchthe company who provided the winning bidreceived information about the countys requirement for the contract several months prior to the official solicitation of proposals went out in February 2009. Monday, Richard Beebe a democratic appointee to the Monroe Security and Safety Systems (M3S), --a board created to administer the contract-sent a letter to County Executive Maggie Brooks. The letter requests that Brooks treat the bidding investigation seriously and cooperate fully with state and federal investigators. I am greatly troubled by the events of the past week, in which agents of the state Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation seized records from M3s and the Navitech Services Corporation, Beebe writes. Apparently, someone leaked a copy of the bid before it was released publicly, like a month before it was released publicly, said Joe Rittler, staff director of the Monroe County Legislature Democratic Caucus. They released it to the company that was the eventual winning bidder. Rittler said when the audit came out from the New York State Comptroller, Maggie Brooks said it was politically motivated and there was no merit to it. Last week, we found that investigation has now turned into a criminal investigation. Apparently, its a result of the comptrollers audit and the attorney general and the federal bureau of investigation are now looking into the rewarding of the two hundred and something million dollar contract. NY State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and the FBI seized records from M3S and the Navitech Services Corporation May 29th. Beebe said his job at M3S is to be the publics watchdog. Last week they executed a bunch of search warrants at the winning bidders company, Rittler said. We felt that it was important to make sure that as board member, he (Beebe) let everyone know that anyone doing business with M3S, he expects them to fully cooperate with the investigation. And that includes the county. Rittler said this is a serious issue because the contract manages more than $200 million dollars worth of public safety and communication infrastructure, which are the things that police officers and first responders rely on to communicate. It could end up with nothing happening, them deciding there was no criminal wrongdoing, all the way up

Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks to them deciding there was criminal wrongdoing by the administration officials and coming down with indictments. It could be anywhere in between. Monroe County officials have denied any wrongdoing in the awarding of the contract.

Local Organization Make Plans for an Urban Park in High Falls

Local nonprofit organization Friends of the GardenAerial purchased almost 28,500 square feet of land that surrounds the area known as High Falls, including the old RG&E Station 4, and the land the water falls over. Vice President of Communications for The Philipson Group, Inc. Jackie Mangione said, Its something they (Friends of the GardenAerial) have been working towards for about 4 years now, since the nonprofit was formed in March of 2011. The 28,478 square-foot property is naturally known as 275 St. Paul Street, a plot that contains the landmark Rochester Gas & Electric Station #4 as well as the escarpment over which the Genesee River flows, creating the 96-foot-high cascade known as High Falls. Mangione said this purchase was the first major step in the ten year plan. The whole point in purchasing that land was to enable the group to build a bridge that goes over the falls. It will create a mile loop trail. What will be in that trail is various destinations that will have different nuances. It could include parks, waterways, and the loop will complete the bridge. The land below the falls is all owned by RG&E, which the group cannot touch at this point. However, the group is working with legislatures and various interested parties and groups to develop plans to attain that land as well. This purchase really is part of the upper falls and high falls and in the early days Station #4 use to harness the power from the falls to run the flour mill and really this is an industrial area, Mangione said. So what we want to do is turn this back over to Left, High Falls Circa 1818, and right, present the community so they can enjoy the approved. Theres no other city in the falls, not just from the Pont de Rennes U.S. that has a 96 foot waterfall and bridge but from that mile access a gorge in the middle of their city like loop that were trying to open up. Just we have. It such an underutilized asset greening the High Falls district. and part of the city. The funds for this project will come from grants and donations. Now its necessary to get the public and the community behind it so that we can start acting on some of the plans we have and have some plan The way this going to benefit the community is by creating this loop it not only links High Falls to downtown and center city, but it becomes a greenway or park for everyone to enjoy.

Hillside Work Scholarship Connection Celebrates 270 At Risk Students

270 high school seniors were honored by the Hillside WorkScholarship Connection with an endof-year celebration recognizing their achievements and participation in the dropout prevention program Wednesday at the Auditorium Theatre. The students participated in a commencement processional wearing a cap and gown to mark this celebratory event. County Executive Maggie Brooks addressed the students and recognized their determination and success. Danny Wegman, who founded Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection with his father in 1987 also was in attendance. Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection Executive Director, Don Armstrong said, This is our 19th year with this ceremony. All of the students in the program would be considered at risk. Students received various amounts of scholarship, some up to $1500 to help with college costs. Armstrong said the scholarships are renewable as long as the students remains in school. Hillside Work-Scholarship Connections youth development program that helps students stay and graduate from high school with the skills and confidence they need to be successful at home, at college and at the workplace. The program provides academic support, part-time employment experience and long-term mentoring from school-based youth advocates. Hillside Work-Scholarship Connections full-time youth advocates mentor more than 2,200 students across 16 Rochester City Schools.

Cuomo to attend meeting on his tax-free New York plan

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Gov. Andrew Cuomo is getting together with college presidents and economic development officials from across New York to discuss his plan to offer tax-free zones for high-tech businesses that move onto or next to college campuses. Cuomo is attending a meeting at noon Monday with college officials and members of regional economic development councils at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering, part of the University at Albany. The governor unveiled his tax-free New York initiative last month. He says the plan would create jobs in a long-stagnant upstate economy by connecting academic research campuses with businesses that would receive tax exemptions. Cuomos proposal has been criticized by the Civil Service Employees Association as ``another special giveaway to business.

A man who was turned in to police by his landlady admitted in court Tuesday that he made death threats on Facebook against top-tier politicians in New York and Washington, predicting a dirt nap for them and writing, I cannot wait to start killing the scum. Lawrence Mulqueen, 50, pleaded guilty to federal charges in exchange for an agreement from prosecutors to recommend a sentence of 12 to 18 months. Authorities said Mulqueen, using a pseudonym, ranted online that he wanted to kill Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey and members of the Congressional Black Caucus. Mulqueen was arrested in February when his landlady complained he was harassing her. Police said she tipped them about the Facebook page, which was under a pseudonym and has been taken down. The federal complaint attributed dirt nap and scum statements to Mulqueen as well as several racist and obscene statements. The first wave to protect against is the inner city scum, do all you can to waste these lowlifes but be mindful of your ammo, Mulqueen was quoted as posting. Use blades when you can to conserve bullets. He also allegedly said he wanted all of President Barack Obamas followers dead, calling them traitor scum. Death to them all, he said, according to a police report.

NY man admits to death threats on Facebook against politicians

Police found two rifles and other weapons in his Nanuet apartment. But Mulqueen indicated in court Tuesday that he didnt intend to follow through on his threats, telling the judge, I never meant any harm to anybody. I posted threats that I shouldnt have made, he admitted. He said he was angry because the politicians were proposing legislation I found to be unconstitutional. He did not elaborate. Police said the weapons were illegal because Mulqueen had drunkendriving convictions. The federal indictment did not name Mulqueens targets, but police listed the politicians names when Mulqueen was arrested last month. It was disclosed in court Tuesday that a political activist who was not an officeholder was also on Mulqueens list. Neither defense attorney Jason Ser nor prosecutor Ilan Graff would identify that person. Judge Kenneth Karas said that in the plea agreement, the defense and prosecution agreed that federal guidelines call for a sentence of 12 to 18 months. The judge warned Mulqueen, however, that he could sentence him to as much as 15 years, the maximum he would have faced if convicted at trial. Sentencing was set for Oct. 16. Mulqueen is being held without bail. Mulqueen still faces a charge in state court concerning the illegal weapons. His lawyer said Tuesday that a deal may be in the works there as well. Rochester will soon celebrate its 11th annual Juneteenth parade and festivities Friday, June 14th thru Saturday June 15th. Music, entertainment, food, vendors and reenactments will fill the streets of the city for this historic two day event. This years theme and community goal is Cooperative Economics to build our own businesses, control the

economics of our own community and share in all its work and wealth. The first event will be a panel discussion entitled The State of Black Rochester, which will be held Friday evening at 6:30pm at the Frederick Douglass Resource Center. True Networking Thursdays will be hosting this event as part of their African American Giving Initiative.

Saturday morning at Mount Hope Cemetery, the Rochester-Monroe County Freedom Trail Commission will present On Behalf of Those Who Lie in Yonder Hallow Ground which is the 10th Commemoration of Men of Color to Arms and the Emancipation Proclamation that legalized the enlistment of men of color in the Civil War Union Army. The Juneteenth parade will finish the rest of the day and night at the Susan B. Anthony Park. Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers, led

by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This was two and a half years after President Lincolns Emancipation Proclamation, which had become official January 1st, 1863. Every June 19th ancestors would dress up and put on the years biggest festivity to celebrate, commemorate and affirm that being free has produced a good life for their families, communities and progress for the Nation. Monroe High School Receives The DIGIES Award

The Monroe High School Video club was recognized at the 7th Annual Digital Media Festival, The DIGIES on May 23rd. The DIGIES is a showcase of digital work from the Rochester region. This is a competitive media festival in four categories: audio, image, publication and videos. Monroe students submitted two videos, LIVING WITH FEAR : Anti Bullying Video, produced by Angel Lopez, a senior at Monroe, and SKIP OR NOT TO SKIP: Class Attendance and Academic Performance. Lopezs video was awarded 3rd place while SKIP OR NOT TO SKIP received 2nd place. Liza Steffen, an ESOL teacher at Monroe is the creator of the Monroe High School Video Club. The Monroe students honored Mrs. Steffen at the event for her mentoring, vision and dedication to film studies and leadership. She was thanked her for leading as the pioneer in promoting the career path of film studies through after school programing. Principal Ramirez, was thanked for his support and providing transportation for the parents, students and staff to the SUNY Geneseo award ceremony. The Director of The DIGIES recognized the student quality and content presented in the video. This is the first time the RCSD has received a The DIGIES award.

Cuomo makes big push to strengthen abortion in NY

ALBANY, N.Y. - (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo will begin his big move to strengthen abortion rights in New York state by trying to portray any opponents to it as opposing the Roe v. Wade court decision that made abortion legal. A rally is scheduled Tuesday in Albany to coincide with the Democrats final effort to pass his proposal amid mounting opposition. Cuomo says he simply wants to put federal protections under the Roe v. Wade decision into state law in case the U.S. Supreme Court overturns the landmark decision that made abortion legal. But opponents say its unnecessary and would expand abortion. The abortion provision is part of Cuomos 10-point agenda for womens rights, but the only one with significant opposition. It threatens the entire agenda, which Cuomo says he wont accept without the abortion piece.

Hearing on 11-mile electric line in eastern NY

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ Utility regulators are taking public comment on plans for en electricity transmission line in eastern New York. The state Public Service Commission says it will accept comment by mail and email and during a hearing on New York State Electric and Gas Corp.s plan for the Columbia County Transmission Project. The utility wants to build an 11-mile stretch of 115 kilovolt transmission line in the towns of Chatham, Ghent, and Stockport. The June 14 hearing at the West Ghent Fire Company Station in Ghent will begin at 4 p.m. with a description of the project.

National NAACP Applauds Historic Expansion of Voting Rights
(TriceEdneyWire.com) - This is a great step for Virginia and we look forward to working with the Commonwealth on expanding the vote, stated Benjamin Todd Jealous, national president and CEO of the NAACP. Anyone who has made a mistake, done their time and paid their debt to society should be able to join their neighbors at the voting booth. The head of the nations oldest and largest civil rights organization issued the statement in response to Republican Gov. Bob McDonnells historic and unprecedented plan to streamline the voter rights restoration process for people with nonviolent felony convictions. In a news conference at Cedar Street Baptist Church of God in Richmonds mostly black Church Hill community, the governor said nonviolent felons who finish serving their sentences and maintain, after that, a clean record will regain their right to vote and other civil rights on an individual basis without having to apply. The governor also is eliminating a twoyear waiting period for former felons convicted of nonviolent crimes to have their civil rights restored. Previously, they also had to apply. Cases will now be automatically considered without an application. It really is a personal thing, Gov. McDonnell said. I believe in an America of second chances. The governor was joined on stage at the news conference by civil rights advocates and legislators from both parties, including members of the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, who have pressed for years to reform the states strict process for restoring exfelons rights. In Virginia, only the governor can restore these rights. Gov. McDonnell already has streamlined the process and has restored the rights of more than 4,800 former felons more than any previous administration. But the Sentencing Project says about 350,000 Virginians who have completed their sentences remained disenfranchised in 2010. Thousands of those residents could become registered voters in time for the November election as a result of Gov. McDonnells new policy. Violent felons will still have to wait five years and apply to regain their rights to vote, hold public office, serve on a jury or become a notary public. The announcement came a day after Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli released a report by an advisory committee he appointed in March to study restoration of rights. The panel concluded that the process could be improved by designating an executive branch agency to do all the legwork, working with religious and community groups to solicit and process applications for the governors consideration. The attorney general said he liked the idea of outside help but preferred to keep the program in the Secretary of the Commonwealths office. The Cuccinelli task force said the Virginia Constitution does not allow the governor to issue an executive order restoring all felons rights, and Gov. McDonnells new policy stops short of that by continuing to handle each case individually. I wanted to use the maximum authority I had, Gov. McDonnell told reporters. An executive order is probably beyond the scope of my authority. He said the new process will eliminate subjectivity. Your civil rights in this country should not be dependent on the whims of one person, he said. The change was welcome news for Darrell Gooden of Richmond, who was convicted of marijuana and cocaine possession in 2002. He said he applied to regain his rights in 2008, when Democrat Tim Kaine was governor, but was turned down because of a speeding ticket. He hasnt reapplied, and now he wont have to. I want my children to see that the American dream is not just a dream, the 40-year-old father of three said. Attempts to amend the constitution to allow the blanket automatic restoration of nonviolent felons rights have failed repeatedly, most recently in the 2013 General Assembly. The constitutional amendment, historically championed by Democrats, was backed by the Republican governor and attorney general this year but was rejected by the heavily GOP House of Delegates. The ACLU of Virginia praised Gov. McDonnell for further expediting the rights restoration process. The governor will be giving voice to thousands of Virginians who have been denied participation in elections due to an antiquated and regressive voting law in the commonwealth, ACLU of Virginia board president Jayne Barnard said in a news release. Virginia New Majority, an advocacy group, said it would follow up Gov. McDonnells policy change which

is effective July 15 with a voter registration drive. Were going to celebrate today, but we have to get right back to work tomorrow, said Jon Liss, the groups executive director. Were making plans to ensure that people with nonviolent felony convictions will be registered in time for the November elections. Attorney General Cuccinelli, the Republican candidate for governor, lauded Gov. McDonnell for pushing his own reforms even further. We needed to simplify the process for those who want to regain their civil rights so they can return to full participation in society, he said. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe called the change an important step forward on an issue of justice for Virginians who have paid their debt to society. Gov. McDonnell said he expects the next governor to keep his new policy. The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Every now and then I feel the need to revisit and discuss one of my favorite pet peeves, egocentric wannabes. to respect the talent and creativity of others. They are actors and actresses with no real fan base. They are coaches whose teams fail to win. They are unsigned entertainers and performers who confuse applause with the fact they have arrived and are successful. They are the pastors, the ministers, and the bishops whose behavior is often insulting and unbecoming to their profession. They are the socalled professionals who come across as everything but. They are oftentimes carpetbaggers who come to my city, thinking we need to be saved from something. They often come assuming that no one in town can do what they do as well as they think they can. They usually arrive with one suitcase representing their life-long accomplishments to date. I have always had a problem with homegrown talent being overlooked, and recruitment for various employment vacancies going beyond the confines of Rochester. This complaint is nothing new if you have followed my writings over the years. You see, I still have critics who think I started doing what I do yesterday. Just to bring some of you up to speed, I feel the need to revisit my personal history as it relates to my editorials and columns. I need to help some understand where my fan base comes from; and how much some of you appreciate my ability to tell it like it is, not like it was, like it is. It would be safe to say my first published pieces appeared in the Buffalo/ Rochester/Syracuse Challenger when it was owned by former Assemblyman Arthur Eve. My first column focused on entertainment, jazz performers in particular, that used to perform in the Pythodd Room.

Egocentric Wannabes in the ROC

This was the late 60s when I was blessed enough to have interviewed Jimmy McGriff, George Benson, Johnny Lytle, Roy Ayers, Bu Pleasant, Houston Person, Grant Green, Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Scott, Lou Donaldson, Gary Chandler, Charlie Earland, Jimmy Ponder, Pat Methany, Richard Groove Holmes, Miles Davis, Rashan Roland Kirk and many more. In addition to the weekly entertainment column I wrote, I would from time to time offer up a variety of editorials, focused strictly on how I felt about a local or national issue. It was then I discovered that many in the community were loving my editorials more than the entertainment profiles; and a star was born. Funny thing is, the aforementioned musicians were successful, signed and recorded musicians. But, space will not permit me to elaborate on the egocentric wannabes in entertainment I have come across since then. Having managed two bands, a variety of singers representing everything from R & B to Gospel, I can attest to how applause can inflate an ego. Applause can really hurt someone who is not accustomed to receiving it. The last musician I worked with tripped out because 68 people showed up for a performance. I thanked God for revealing this ego because had we made it to Hollywood, or he actually got signed, the question would become, How will he handle thousands? E.G.O. (Easing God Out) is a powerful aphrodisiac, and some folks dont realize the negative impact of having an out of control one. When Joan Howard assumed the role of publisher for her dads 60-year-old paper, The Frederick Douglass Voice, she recruited me to write a column. She named my column Straight, No Chaser, because she felt it spoke to and summarized my confrontational, no-holds-barred, truthful writing style. Thats just who I am. See, the truth is, I write because others say I can and constantly tell me how much they appreciate it. I listen to my supporters, not my naysayers. Because of this, what the critics, the egomaniacs, or the change agents believe is a moot point to me. Being secure in your own skin and accepting others for who they are brings with it a sense of peace. In addition, accepting that no one is qualified to change anything about you, and that change comes from within you, is wisdom. Rochester is full of people who want things to go their way everyday. I have been in The Roc all of my life, and this is my town. Some folks need to be thankful that I allow them to remain here, and choose only periodically to deflate those mighty egos they bring to the table. Please dont expect me to dance with you when you are wearing someone elses shoes. Nothing is new, the game is the same. Its only the names and faces of the egocentric wannabes that you have to be cautious about. Some are wearing masks and do come dressed in sheeps clothing. Watch the ones who claim to be leaders, especially if, when you look behind them, no one is following.

Rochester is full of them. I GLORIA WINSTON AL-SARAG normally ignore them until they find their way into my personal space, and attempt to reach out and touch me, spiritually. We all know them. And, we all know I am not above naming names. But, in this case, I will let you guess who Cinderella or Cinderfella is. They come in various heights, gender, size and color. The one thing they all have in common is they are full of themselves. So full they fail to see or accept someone elses values because they believe they are all that, a bag of chips and some dip. They really consider themselves to be special, more special than you. You can find the egocentric wannabes in all arenas. They are educators who not only teach but who believe they have no further lessons to learn. They are politicians who no longer listen to or consult with their constituency. Some have allowed power to corrupt them. They are business people who assume their arrogance, high prices and mistreatment of customers is going to sustain them. They are attorneys who would represent themselves in court if given the opportunity. They are law enforcement officers who would arrest their mothers and feel they are far above the law. They are stoic journalists who get the common sense educated out of them and fail

Greece Police Assault, Arrest and Cuss at Black Teen for Walking on a Public Sidewalk
The video, recorded last month by a Greece Olympia High School student, begins with a female Greece police officer yelling at Corey McCloud, an Africandavy vara American teen, to Keep walking! even though he is on a public sidewalk. A male Greece Police Department officer dressed in plain clothes, then yells at McCloud, Keep walking! Keep walking or youre going to jail! Im not doing nothing, McCloud is seen and heard telling the officer. Youre blocking the sidewalk! the officer yells. McCloud then tries to explain to the officer that he wasnt blocking the sidewalk, and that if anything, the officer is the one who is walking towards him. The angry Greece Police officer then says Fuck it, youre under arrest! and grabs the young man, twisting his arms, and bringing him down on the ground. Greece Police Captain Patrick Pelan told me that plain clothes officer is Sgt. James Carris, and the female officer is Valerie Cutt. According to the teen who recorded the video, there was a fight at the high school, that did not involve the young teen who was arrested. Captain Phelan sees it differently.

I couldnt disagree more. What I see in that video are bully, rogue Greece police officers giving an unlawful order to a young man who (they say) was doing wrong, simply walking on a public sidewalk. I also see a young man who tries to explain to officers that not only is he not doing anything wrong, but that in fact, its them, who are walking towards him and its them who are being confrontational. Fighting stance? Are you kidding me? The young man is retreating, backing up, as hes being cornered by Greece Police Department officers. I see a young man with his the palms of his hands showing, in a retreating manner.

They followed us off the property, and then the undercover officer came out of nowhere, said the teen.

Phelan says that Greece police were disbursing crowds, and that while most of the youths followed orders, McCloud did not. If he had walked away, he would have gone home, said Phelan. Captain Phelan also said that Corey McCloud took on a fighting stance. He was in a fighting stance. He had his hands in a fighting position, and he stuck his chest out, said Phelan.

Just when you think that all hope is lost God has a way of letting you know that there is still hope and that we can still hold on to what is biblical and what is right in His sight. I was privileged to not only participate but to officiate the marriage of my niece and her fianc (now husband) this past weekend.

Marriage Gods Way!

It would be nice if there were politicians that would have a backbone and stand up for what God has said instead of giving into special interests. It is much better to lose a campaign by standing on ones principles than bowing to special interests. Attending this wedding was an example of the beauty of the plan of God when it comes to marriage: Two young people (one man and one woman) sharing their love and commitment to one another in front of their friends and family. As I looked on, I know that God was in the midst. This is the manifestation of His plan when He created marriage. Regardless of what society says, Gods way is the best way. Gods way is not divorce when things do not go your way, His way is not living together, unmarried, because it makes financial sense and His way is not to have same sex couples getting married. The attack continues in 2013 and it appears that even Republicans have started to be more focused in keeping their guns (which I support) than on standing on Gods side when it comes to marriage. Unfortunately, many African-Americans have already forfeited their stance on this issue by so blindly supporting a president that supports the ides of homosexual marriage. While many, many African-Americans will preach against homosexuality in their pulpits they refuse to stand against it when they voice their support of politicians. A question they need to ask is: If homosexuality is wrong when preaching in the pulpit, shouldnt it be just as wrong in the political arena? The God that was against it when they are preaching is against it when they are going to the voting booth. Think for one moment what would occur if all of the African-Americans that say they are against homosexuality from a biblical perspective actually lived that view out in their politics. This issue of homosexual marriage would go away. I am proud of my niece and my new nephew for being willing to stand for their God-given beliefs and covenant themselves in marriage as created and designed by God. During counseling, my wife and I let them know of the blessing that comes by having God as the foundation of their lives together. The blessing of the Lord will not come on a union where the two parties are of the same sex. Nor is there a blessing when the couple decides to live together without entering the covenant of marriage. I appreciate the phrase in the wedding vows that states, whom God has put together let no man put asunder. This weekend God showed me that regardless of what society does, no man will change His plan for marriage; one man, one woman together until death they do part. I am encouraged and my hope has been restored.

As I started the ceremony, I was able to take time to congratulate them on being willing to do things Gods way. When one does things the way that God intended being blessed is a natural outcome. It is evident that the institution of marriage is under attack in our society today. It has been under attack since God created it. However, in the last several years it has been in the crosshairs of those that would call themselves progressive in our society. The key argument that folks make is that all that is needed is for two people to love each other, regardless of their gender. While love is indeed a key element, a more fundamental fact is that marriage is to be between one man and one woman. In our day the homosexual agenda has advanced to the point where in the name of politics, states are choosing to allow same sex couples to be married. This is an abomination in the sight of God.

Phelan said that McCloud was charged with disorderly conduct. I asked Phelan, what exactly did Corey McCloud do in order to be charged with disorderly conduct, but Phelan said that he did not have the criminal complaint in front of him, so he could not say. I find it interesting that despite Phelan being adamant that McCloud did not follow what he calls lawful orders, he couldnt tell me exactly what the young man is accused of, without reading the report. I then asked Captain Phelan what he thought about Sgt. Carris telling a minor: Fuck it, youre under arrest! He did not hesitate in giving me an answer. The use of that kind of language is absolutely inappropriate, and we are dealing with that, said Phelan, before adding: It is not acceptable, and does not comply with our professional standards. Phelan, however, would not say what we are dealing with that meant. It doesnt surprise me that Captain Phelan is going to defend his officers actions; and justify the arrest of Corey McCloud, I mean thats his job. As for your comment Captain Phelan, that if Corey had walked away, he would have gone home: No sir, YOUR officers created, then escalated, a completely unnecessary situation. Your Sgt. James Carris own words to a minor, Fuck it, youre under arrest! and your Sgt.s behavior, caught on video, show that he was out of line!
