If you are in the diabetes community I’m sure that you have seen videos of policemistakenly restraining an individual on suspicion of being drunk when in fact, they wereexperiencing hypoglycemia. I came up with this idea when saw 2 police officers tazinganindividual because he wouldn’t get out of his truck. After they had him out, it came tolight that he was diabetic and his blood sugar level was down to 11! Now,this individualwas wearing a Medic medallion under his shirt. It was not visible to the officers. In all honesty, I can’t blame the officers for their reaction. They followed procedures. Butit got me thinking that there has to be a better way to warn emergency personal of amedical condition. My son has type 1 diabetes, he’s only 5 now. But I can imagine thatwhen he’s 16 or 17 and driving, the first thoughts that would come to a police officers’mind if he saw my son swerving would be that he was drunk, not that he was diabetic. There are a lot of products that are meant to warn emergency personal of a specificcondition. Unfortunately whether lack of training or oversight, most of the time, thosethings are not seen. We do have bracelets, necklaces, watches, stickers for the car etc.I came up with an idea that I think would work wonders not only for diabetes but forother medical conditions.I have seen accident pictures where the car was total but the steering wheel was stillintact, when an officer walks up to your car, the first thing that he will see will be thesteering wheel. We have steering wheel covers with just about every cartoon out there, every sport team etc. What I never saw was a steering wheel cover alerting people of amedical condition.I’ve created a little prototype. Obviously, as you can see from the pictures, I have notalent to implement anything but I figured that it would still give you an idea.
