The story of a young Filipino boy with a heart ailment was
rst presented to the Filipino Parents’Association of MetropolitanToronto (Filpar) and the OntarioFilipino Women’s Club (OFWC)through the boy’s relatives, whoare members of both communityorganizations.
Heart malady since birth
When Yvan Chris Cuntapaywas born in the Philippines, hewas diagnosed with congenitalheart disease. At four months old, heunderwent an open heart surgeryat the Philippine Heart Center for Asia. But Chris suffered post-operative complications that madehim stay longer in the hospital, draining the little resources of his parents Marivie and ReyCuntapay.Chris’ parents acquired loansfrom many private individuals toenable him to get his medications, which were very expensive in thePhilippines.
Open heart surgery
As Chris grew up, his conditionrequired more intense medicalneeds that resulted in a secondopen heart surgery. As the surgery could not bedone in the Philippines, Chris’family applied for the Herbie Fundfor Sick Kids and came to Canadato have the operation done.In July 2008, Chris, whoturned seven, underwent a rightmaze procedure, pulmonaryarteroplasty, and his tricuspid and pulmonary valves were replacedwith an arti
cial one. After the surgery, he was inand out of the Toronto Hospitalfor Sick Children.
A mother’s sacri
ce
As Chris and Marivie wereneither landed immigrants nor Canadian citizens, they were notentitled to state health assistancesuch as the Ontario HealthInsurance Program, home care, drug bene
ts, or Wheel Trans. His mother, Marivie - whocame with Chris to Canada whilehusband Rey remained home - hadto take her son to the hospital.A relative usually drives bothto the hospital for appointmentsthree times a week.Chris’s expensive medicationsare only available through Sick Kids, and Herbie Fund could only provide for his treatment at Sick Kids.Todate, Chris has used up hisHerbie Fund allotment.
Call for help
In late January, Chris becamevery ill and Sick Kids askedMarivie to have husband Reycome over to Canada.Chris survived, but continuedto be in and out of the hospital. He might require a hearttransplant.Much as they would want towork to address their and their son’s needs. Rey and Marivie arelegally unable to because of their temporary visitor status. Thus, the Cuntapay family hasturned to the Filipino communityto help them hurdle their dif
cultsituation.
Initial donations
Filpar president Alex Paruchaand OFWC president ElsieMaranan have cited EnricoMayo, Lipa City Association of Canada president, for
nancialcontributions given for Chris.
