Mathematics instruction in these recent days should be focused and
emphasized on students’ cognitive processes. This is reasonably because byinvestigating students’ cognitive processes then teacher can know about students’
thinking ability in a good way,and therefore teacher can use proper strategies andapproaches in order to reach optimum results. Thinking abilities is an importantfactor which determine students in mastering mathematics concepts, and for that it
needs to get teacher’s seriously attenti
on. Thinking abilites which possessed by eachstudent are truly different caused by many factors, one of those is cognitive styles.Problem solving is the most proper approaching in order to practice students forusing all their thinking abilities, and also through problem solving then it can be
verified students’ cognitive processes. This research intended to describe students’ cognitive processes based
on two different cognitive styles, which are Field Independent student (FI) andField Dependent student(FD). This research conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Manyar-Gresik. The subjects in this research are two students of Class XI IPA-2, consists of one student possessed field independent style and one student possessed fielddependent style. Derivative topic was
tested in order to gain description of students’
cognitive processes while solving problem. The results have shown that there weresignificant differently between two subjects at the stage of understanding theproblem, that was the student who possessed field independent showed betterperceiving of the problem compared to the student who possessed field dependent. And also the field independent subject showed better perceiving on derivativeconcepts compare to the field dependent subject.
