Windows Movie Maker
Definition
You can use Windows Movie Maker to captureaudio and video to your computer  from a video camera, Web camera, or other video source, and then use thecaptured content in your movies.
You can also import existing audio, video, or still pictures into Windows MovieMaker to use in the movies you create.
After editing the audio and video content in Windows Movie Maker, which caninclude adding titles, video transitions, or effects, you can then save your finalmovie and share it with friends and family.
Basic Terms used in Movie Maker 
The terms collection, project, and movie are used throughout the user interface
Collection
A collection contains audio clips, video clips, or pictures that you have imported or captured in Windows Movie Maker. A collection acts as a container for your clips, whichare smaller segments of audio and video, and helps you organize the imported or capturedcontent. Collections appear in the Collections pane of Windows Movie Maker.
Project
A project contains the arrangement and timing information of audio and video clips,video transitions, video effects, and titles you have added to the storyboard/timeline. Asaved project filein Windows Movie Maker has an .mswmm file name extension.
Movie
A movie is the final project you save by using the Save Movie Wizard. You can save amovie to your computer or to a recordable CD, send it as an attachment in an e-mailmessage, or save and send it to the Web.The saved movie can be watched in a media player, such as Microsoft Windows Media®Player, or in a Web browser.
 
Understanding source files
Source files are the digital media files (for example, audio and video files) or pictures thatyou import into your current project.When you import a video, audio, or picture file, the file remains in the original locationfrom which it was imported. The resulting clip that appears in Windows Movie Maker isa representation of the original source file; it is not a copy of the source file.A Windows Movie Maker  project file is saved with a .mswmm file name extension.
Understanding capture devices
In Windows Movie Maker, you can use a variety of capture devices to captureaudio and video on your computer. A capture device is a piece of hardware that lets you transfer video and audio to your compute
Supported file types
You can import files with the following file name extensions into Windows Movie Maker to use in your project:
Audio files
: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma
Picture files
: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf 
Video files
: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and.wmv
Understanding the Windows MovieMaker interface
The Windows Movie Maker user interface is divided into three main areas:
1.THE MENU BAR AND TOOLBAR,
Provides information about using the menu commands and the toolbar to performtasks in Windows Movie Maker.
2.THE PANESTHE STORYBOARD
 
Provides information about using the Collections pane to view your collections,and about using the Movie Tasks pane to perform common tasks when editing a project and making a movie.
3.TIMELINE.
Provides information about using the storyboard or timeline to work with clips inthe current project.
About the Movie Tasks pane
The Movie Tasks pane lists the common tasks that you may need to perform whenmaking a movie.The Movie Tasks pane lets you perform the following common tasks, according to the point you are at in the process of making a movie.
Capture Video
. Provides options to begin making a movie, such as capturingvideo and importing existing video, pictures, or audio.
Edit Movie
. Provides options for making a movie, such as viewing existingvideo, pictures, audio, video effects, or adding movie titles and credits. You canalso start AutoMovie to begin making a movie automatically.
Finish Movie
. Provides options for saving your final movie, such as to your computer, to a recordable CD, to send as an attachment in an e-mail message, tothe Web, or to a tape in a DV camera.

. Provides help for completing common tasks in WindowsMovie Maker.
About the Collections pane
The Collections pane displays your collections, which contain clips.
The collections are listed by name in the Collections pane on the left, and the clipsin the selected collection are displayed in the Contents pane on the right.
You can drag clips from the Contents pane or a collection from the Collections pane to the storyboard/timeline for your current project.
You can also drag clips to the monitor to play them. A clip only represents theoriginal source file so the file can be recognized and used in Windows MovieMaker.
