pleasuretobewithyoutoday,

therole

significance
of
battlefieldairattackduringtheSecondWorldWar.
We
are,alas,livinginanerawhenanothergeneration
of
youngAmericansareperfonning
with
adedicationandcouragethatisexltaOrdinary,even
in
comparisonwiththeirgrandfathers-andgreatgrandfatherswhofoughtfromthehedgerows
of
France

the
jungles
of
theSouthPacific
and
theArcticwilliwaws
of
theAleutians,andallpoints
in
between.
As
theirpredecessorswereabletodrawuponthejoint-serviceAmerican
ainnen
forbattlefieldairsupport,so,
100,
are
our
forces
today
ableto
do
so.And
as
a
cenain
Mr.AIZarqawicouldattest,
if
abletospeak,
the
capability
and
reach
of
our
banlefieldattackforceshasneverbeen
as
lethal
or
as
swift
as
in
thepresent
day.
Where
did
it

Backin1911,actually,duringanItalianTurkish
war
inLibya.ButitreallyexpandedcoincidentwiththeBaltle
of
the
Somme
...
atthatpoint,wehadtheemergence
of
frequent,
if
stillrelativelyunorganized,groundattack.
It
wassuchadisconcertingexperiencethat
Gennan
troopsfeltitwasa

of
punishment,a
strafen

andhencethewordstrafinginthepresentday.Bymid-1917,thefirstorganizedgroundattacksortiesweretakingplaceacrosstheWesternFront.Attackersdistinguishedbetween"trenchstrafing,"whichwewouldconsiderClose
