ompanion animals are agreat joy to people and allpet-owners have heart warming stories to shareabout their cats and dogs. How-ever, it’s widely known that thenumber of needy animals is fargreater than the number of fam-ilies that can adopt them. If youhave a pet or if you’ve befriendeda homeless one, experts strongly recommend that they be neu-tered. The benefits are many andspan reasons that include boththe biological and ethical. Veterinarians recommendneutering in male dogs to reduceaggressiveness towards otherdogs and to prevent prostategland enlargement, perineal her-nias and testicular cancers. Whilethis has health benefits, it doesnot affect other behaviour suchas playfulness or affection. Forpuppies, neutering is done be-tween 4-6 months of age.Birth control for female catsand dogs has the crucial benefitof population control. This star-tling statistic is courtesy the Hu-mane Society of United States(hsus.org) – a female dog and heroffspring can produce 67,000puppies in just six years. Anuradha Sawhney, Chief Functionary of PETA India saysthat the single most importantthing that we can do to save ani-mals from all the suffering anddeath that their overpopulationcauses is to spay and neuterthem. “Every single stray cat, ev-ery neglected dog came from ananimal that wasn’t spayed orneutered. While animals are dy-ing for lack of good homes, there’s no excuse for allowing ourdogs and cats to even have ‘justone litter’. Sterilization is an im-portant and routine procedurethat helps reduce the dog over-population problem and steril-ized dogs are less likely to bite ashormones no longer play a role intheir moods”. While efforts are on to cam-paign for government-fundedanimal birth control projects, in-dividuals can play a key role by doing this for their own pets. Sav-ing lives is as simple as ABC.

ixty four years ago this day, Adolf Hitler committed sui-cide by shooting himself in-side his bunker in Berlin. A number of Neo-Nazi groups ido-lising the fuehrer had surfacedacross the globe after the war. Some are still active and re-nowned for notoriety. Here is a name-plate makernear Spencer Plaza in Chennai, who runs a shop after Hitler’s Na-zi party and even given it thename Great Eagle Plastic Works. That’s not all. He’s running it tofulfil a dead friend’s wish, an ar-dent fan of Hitler and even wrotea book on him that was publishedin 2005.R. (My Struggle).“The shop was owned by my long time buddy Mohammed Alees who was a die-hard fan of  Adolf Hitler. Before he death dueto cancer last April, he handedover the shop to me. I decided togo ahead with the same nameand Nazi party symbol for theshop in memory of  Alees even thoughhe gave me an op-tion to change it,”he says.Mohammed Alees ran GoldenEagle Plastic Worksfor over two dec-ades before theCorporation au-thorities evictedthe pavement shopthree years ago.Neighbouring hawkers remem-ber Alees as a boldman who oftenspoke proudly of Hitler.
