for the 768 miledrive to San Felipe, Mexico. We arrived at 6:00A.M. Most of us have not stayed up all nightsince our high school graduation. The steel 80 foot fishing boat we boarded hadseen better days and was well broken in. It(she?) also carried 8 pongas, row boats with outboard motors used for the actual fishing. Afterloading gear and stores, we cruised about 200miles south to fish our way north, back to SanFelipe.Communication was a major problem. OurSpanish was not so good and their English evenworse. So, what time to get up, to eat, to fishand what to do when, was frustrating. Our otherarea of even greater concern was safety---nodrill on fire extinguishers, life jackets or lifesaving equipment. Even when we went out fish-ing in the open pongas, out of sight of themother ship, there was no VHA radio, life jack-ets, flashlight, flares, fathometer, fishfinder andat times we had 8 foot seas.At one time we were led to believe a majorstorm was on our path. The radio on the boatwas one of the many things not working. TheCaptain was so concerned that he took a pongato a town 5 miles away to check on their radioand phone, only to find the town’s generator notworking for the night. Keep in mind we had 21fishermen and a crew of 13 for a total of 34 peo-ple on this boat. In spite of all of this we had agreat adventure and experienced becoming bet-ter acquainted. The reason I share all of this with you is this.Three weeks ago we were cruising the bay andas we approached the San Rafael Bridge, I spot-ted two Coast Guard boats. In that instant theblue lights went on. I think I recall saying, “OHSUGAR!” They came alongside and asked if we had been inspected and I said, “Yes”. Iproudly showed off my 2008 Coast Guardsticker. He said a little louder, “When was thelast time you were boarded?” I replied,“Never”. He replied, “Permission to comeaboard”. I said, “Sure.”While cruising on auto pilot at 7 knots, twoyoung men jumped on board. They politely dida thorough safety check and checked our docu-mentation. The process took 30 minutes. Thepoint is SAFETY-----SAFETY. You can neverbe too safe. Thanks Coast Guard.

I am writing this column from theMarin YC and just prior to our depar-ture for the Blue Water Cruise tomor-row. We are having a joyful time with9 other boats from our club. We en- joyed a visit with the Marin Club lastnight at dinner and today Scott andDiane Brown arranged an excursion toChina Camp State Park, a few milesfrom the marina. As usual, when theNapa YC is on the water, we are hav-ing fun!Club activities that are coming inOctober include: Oct 3, General Meet-ing and Election at 6 PM; Oct 10-18,Bay Cruise; Oct 31, Halloween Party.October will be a busy month! Come join us.This month I would like to highlightthe outstanding job our Port Captain,Bill Newton, is doing. We have had anincreased number of visiting clubs atour docks this year. We have also hadsome commercial endeavors that bringus some revenue and help support ourdock maintenance. By being availableto accommodate the requests, Bill hascollected more dock fees than wereanticipated. We are getting good re-ports of the fine time that visiting clubsare experiencing in Napa. This isbeneficial when our club goes cruisingtoo. A special thanks to Bill and rec-ognition as one who is promoting Ca-maraderie on the Water. We are working through the lastprocesses necessary to obtain a build-ing permit for the new Deck. Newmember Chris Fultz is taking a lead ongetting the plans in proper form andmaking an estimate so the Board canauthorize the necessary budget. Withagreement as to the scope of the pro- ject and a building permit, we willsoon be under construction for thislong anticipated project. Our club means a lot of differentthings to each of us. I think the com-mon thread is the good camaraderiewhether it be on a fishing excursion(see Larry’s column), the cruise thatCarol and I are currently enjoying orFriday night at the club. I hope you arefinding your share of the good fun.
