It is a new year and a new 'rear'. Sincethis is my first column, thought I would listthe committee chairs and outline some of their plans.Bob Stephenson has graciously acceptedthe duties of Building and Grounds. Bob isfully aware of the plumbing problems in thepast, and is recommending port a potties onthe grass.Kurt Stahr will be Fleet Captain this yearafter an evening of substantial consumptionof 'Gentleman Jack'. Kurt is excited aboutthe recent reduction in fuel prices and issuggesting weekend trips to Santa Barbara,Fort Bragg, Morro Bay, and Portland. Kurthas assured me that the committee will berun in a democratic format.Merchandise will be headed by Angelaand Art Lewis, who have done a great jobin the past. Art told me that he is expectinga large performance bonus, so I sent a ' bailout request' to congress.Membership will be done by EvelynSilveri who has performed an exceptional job in the past. Some members have com-plained about the size of the membershipcards; so Evelyn is looking into micro chipimplants for them.Sally and Philip Craig will continue theirgreat service to the club putting out themonthly newsletter. Philip informedme that based on the nationalevents of 2008 that the news media has hada strong influence on the direction of thenation and the club newsletter could oper-ate in a similar fashion. Sally informed meprivately that she is restricting Phil to thecirculation desk.Carole Terry has done a great jobheading the advertising and we are grate-ful for her services this year. Carole saysshe is close to completing and advertisingdeal with Macys and Niemen Marcus whichwill definitely increase the club revenue.Lynn Pritchett has again assumed theduties Public Relations. She has informedme that one of her first tasks will be to edu-cate officers and directors of the club not towear partisan political attire in public. Thishas forced Clay and myself to burn ourMcCain hats. The Web site committee is in transitionand we will have a report on them in Janu-ary.I extend a great deal of gratitude to thecommittee heads and look forward to work-ing with each of you this year; althoughworking with me does require a sense of humor.Dirk KruidenierRear Commodore

Happy New Year----2009The Lighted Boat Parade on Decem-ber 6th was outstanding. There were14 boats decorated and the decorationsthis year were bigger and better thanever. The winning boats are as follows:Best Theme--Bob & Joy Magoon onthe “Betty D”Best Visual Effects----Bill & MerrileeNewton on the “Why Not II”Best of Show(a tie)--------Charlie &Karen Anew on “C King Fun”Kurt & Dominique Stahr on“Starship”Honorable Mention--------Larry &Chris Brown on the “Lady C”Thanks to Avi Strugo for captainingthis big event. It was well run and or-ganized. And, despite the cold anddarkness there were no boat mishaps. The biggest problem of the evening wasthe dock starting to sink under theweight of all the party goers and thelack of seating in the clubhouse for thechili dinner. The Change of Watch on December13

FROM THEFLAGBRIDGE
January 2009
Thanks to everyone attending our Annual Meetingand Change of Watch on December 13
th
. I sincerelyhope everyone had a good time It was a festive eve-ning, yet pretty serious when one truly realizes theresponsibility of the positions your new officers haveassumed. I know as incoming Commodore there isgoing to be a lot of opportunity to appreciate what allthose who have served before seemed to make easy. Ican only promise to do the very best I can do with alot of help from all our members and maybe evenhave some fun along the way.My “theme” this year is “Building today toward abright tomorrow”. With all that is on the agendaalready, we should be a very active group. I believethe physical building, such as deck, kitchen expan-sion/remodel and some hardscaping of the groundswill make our club a place we can be proud to visitand bring friends.I further believe building relationships with othermembers and other yacht clubs will serve us wellboth today and in a “bright tomorrow”. One of mygoals has always been to encourage our members toreally participate in activities at the club. From Fri-day Night Dinners to our special events there isplenty to do and enjoy. We need to be a welcomingcommunity to encourage new members in today’sworld.Everyone should make sure building our image inthe community is positive and valued. Offering ourclub to organizations such as the Disabled Veteransprogram, Friends Of the Napa River and others, asour schedule permits, will continue to be viewed in avery positive way. Our Senior Program, headedKaren Agnew and the “Lady Angels” of the clubhave a tremendous positive impact on our contribu-tion to the community.Other yacht clubs love to visit and have us returnto them, as well. This is not only good for the boatingcommunity, but also a good source of revenue for ourclub. We need continue to build those relationshipsand maybe even expand visitors to our club dock when our own schedule allows. Port Captain BillNewton has really made a difference in how ourNVYC is viewed by other clubs. The way we hostthrough providing dinners (a Bob & Nancy Weeksspecialty), our bar team serving our visitors, theGalley and Social teams doing their magic have usvery high on places to cruise by other clubs. Goodwork!!By the time you receive this in early January, weshould be ready to start some of the improvementswaiting in the wings for a new lease. I will commit tokeep the process as a major goal moving to closure. We are close, but not there as of this writing. Theteam we have working on the lease is dedicated andbrings a lot of energy to getting the job done!In the meantime, I wish everyone a Happy Holidayseason!Have a safe and fun time on the water and join usat the club!Clay ParkerCommodore
