To all, I have been a member of the Harford County Technical Rescue Team since the team was formed

and each year I explain to people in the county the hazard of crossing flood waters. One of the many rescue functions of our team is to respond to Swift Water Rescue events in Harford County. Over the next few months we will respond on a large number of Water Rescue related emergencies requiring the Harford County Technical Rescue Team members to enter hazardous waters to save a life. Some rescues we will use our rescue boats but, must of the time we are forced to walkout or swim to the victim. This puts the lives of our rescuers and the victim in great danger. Whenever the county has a major rain event we will be called for help and just about every need for rescue could have been prevented by the victim avoiding the situation. Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control reports that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood waters. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to people walking into or near flood waters. Many of these drownings are preventable. Too many people continue to go around the barriers that are to warn you the area is flooded.

What Can I Do to Avoid Getting Caught is This Situation?

Most flood-related deaths and injuries could be avoided if people who come upon areas covered with water followed this simple advice: Turn Around Don't Drown. The reason that so many people drown during flooding is because few of them realize the incredible power of water. A mere six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock over an adult. It takes only two feet of rushing water to carry away most vehicles. This includes pickups and SUVs. If you come to an area that is covered with water, you will not know the depth of the water or the condition of the ground under the water. This is especially true at night, when your vision is more limited. Play it smart, play it safe. Whether driving or walking, any time you come to a flooded road, Turn Around Don't Drown For more information go to: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/water/tadd/ To check county road status go to: http://www.harfordcountymd.gov/alerts/RoadStatus.cfm Roads that Flood often in Harford County 1.
