The core of the Linux operatingsystem was coded by a Finnishprogrammer called
LinusBenedict Torvalds
in 1991,when he was just 21! He had gota new 386, and he found theexisting DOS and UNIX tooexpensive and inadequate.
The Beginning
In those days, a UNIX-like tiny, free OS called
Minix
was extensively used for academicpurposes. Since its source code was available,Linus decided to take Minix as a model. In hisown words, ‘I wanted to write a better Minix
