The Post-2000 Market
In terms of volume and value, the wine and spirits market has experienced a significantrecovery since 2000-2001, when economic troubles in the technology sector, a collapse of the “speculative” market for grape wine that predominated in the 1990s and general worriesabout the spread of avian influenza (SARS) combined to slash consumption of “social” consumables and significantly reduce the size and frequency of social gatherings. Distilledspirit and grape wine sales have risen 37% and 221%, respectively, in terms of volume since2001, with the whiskey subcategory gaining 76% during the same period.
