Introduction
To end Autism Month 2009 I compiledsome articles and other material I havewritten on autism, and our youngestchild, as well as some other relatedmaterial I have compiled over time. Most is in Afrikaans, but a personunable to understand Afrikaans will findsomething here and there. Our youngest son, Jandré, has beendiagnosed with autism near the age of 16. We lived with this possibility for along time, but up to then the diagnosishad been definitely not autism,” withthe most definite diagnosis aphasia. The neurologist who made this diagno-sis even, when I enquired aboutautism, had me reading from one of hisbooks which clearly stated how thisform of aphasia is often confused withautism. And indeed, Jandré has so many non-typical autistic features. He is veryloving, and even at the age of 16 onecan ask for, and get a hug which hegives with enthusiasm. He is very, veryfond of some people, such as hiscousin Amber. When we realized that there was aproblem with him acquiring we focusedon our home language, Afrikaans. Hetaught himself English however, apparently from TV, where all hisheroes such as Spiderman, speakEnglish. He also taught himself numbers at theage of four, and does the mostamazing ceramic work, especiallymaking model dogs. But he is not alone in the family – hehas an elder brother and he hasparents, and all are affected. In especially the column, Herrie seKerrie, the humor is put to paper. Noparent will survive only staring into the
Inleiding
