Noattemptismadeinthefollowingpagestoprovetheobjectiveandfactualexistenceof theFlyingDiscsandotherstrangeskycraft,sinceonthispointthereisnolongerany doubt.Onaccountofthegreatvarietyinshape,colorandbehavioroftheseflyingobjects,a genericnameisneeded.ThetermEtherShipsorEtherCrafthasbeenadopted,sinceit indicatesthetruenatureandoriginofallthesediversifiedphenomena. ThisleadsustosumupbrieflyourreasonsforNOThavingofferedafourthreprintofthe firstbookletmentionedaboveTHEETHERSHIPMYSTERYANDITSSOLUTIONFLYING DISCS.TheaerialphenomenadiscussedinitcanNOTbyunderstoodwithouthaving recoursetotheconceptofEther(s)andthisinvolvesanunderstandingofvarious conceptsofdensityatechnicalwordusedinfourorfivesensesamongphyisicists.The ETHERSHIPMYSTERYbookletreferstotheetheronlyinasimpleandelementarysense, andisopentovalidobjectionsonthatscore.

 Alsothereare,inthatbooklet,manysentenceswhichshouldberephrasedtoallowfor commentsandinformationreceivedfromtheInnerCircleduringthelasteightyears. THEETHERSHIPMYSTERYANDITSSOLUTION I
Theseriesofaerialphenomenawhichareheredescribedunderthetermetherships (FlyingSaucers)firstattractedpublicattentioninthefallof1946.Itwasbynomeansthe firstappearanceofthesecraftintheskiesofourplanet,butveryfewpersonswereaware ofthisfact,andthepublicasawholeatfirstrefusedtocreditthereportsatall.The newspapers,theradio,andmanypsychologistsandscientificworkersjoinedin discreditingtheallegedfacts,andinattributingthemtodelusionordeliberatefalsifying. Neverthelesstheevidencecontinuedtoaccumulate,withmostcircumstantialanddetailed reportsfromcompetentobservers,untilfinallyasystemicinvestigationwasundertakenby theUnitedStatesAirForce. Theoutcomeofthiswasindeedcurious,sinceaftersometwoyearsofstudyofthe phenomena,theAirForcehasrecentlyannouncedofficiallythatthereisnogenuineand factualbasisforthereports.Theexplanationforthiswilldoubtlessbecomeclearatsome futuretime.Thepublic,however,showsnosignofacceptingthisremarkable pronouncement.Newreportsofthestrangeskyvisitorsappearalmostdaily,andtheir existenceisdefinitelyestablished. Thepurposeofthesepages,therefore,isnottoarguethecasefortheexistenceoftheDiscs orSaucers(sincedatawouldruntosomehundredsofpages),butrathertopresentas simplyaspossiblethetruenatureandmeaningofthephenomena.Itseemstous important,andinthenatureofapublicduty,thatthisbedone.Thereisalready apprehensioninthemindsofmany,andif(asweexpect)manymorestrikingcraftare attributedtosomeforeignandunfriendlygovernment,hostilityandfearmightdevelop; andiftheyarebelievedtocomefromsomeotherplanetofoursolarsystem,unreasoning andsuperstitiousfearistobereckonedwith,perhapswithaconsiderabledegreeofsocial disintegration.Thislatterhypothesis,infact,isalreadybeingadvancedinallseriousness thoughfornobetterreasonthanthatnootheroriginseemsconceivableYetthereis anotherpossiblesource(andweareconvincedthetruesource)forthesestrangecraft,and thetimehascomewhenthisexplanationmustbemadeavailabletoeveryone,inthe simplesttermspossible. Unfortunately,noteveryonewillfindtheexplanationeasilyunderstandable.Itcannotbe disposedofbyawordofoneortwosyllablesonly,suchasMars,Venus,orevenRussia,but requiresalittlesustainedattentionandmentaleffort.Ontheotherhand,theinterestof mostofourreaderswillnotbeinthephysicsandthespeculativescienceinvolved,butina feweminentlypracticalquestions,suchas: 1. WhataretheFlyingDiscs? 2. Wheredotheycomefrom? 3. Whooperatesthem?

 Ananswertothesequestions,ifitcanbegiven,willprobablysatisfytheactivecuriosityofmost readers.Tothoseofamorereflectivemind,andtothescientist,philosopherandnondogmatic religionist,suchanswers,baldlyput,willbeonlyashadowybeginningorperhapstoofantasticto reckonwithatall.Butforourpresentpurposesweshallneglectthesetoughmindedandcritical folk,andanswerourownquestionsinamorecategoricalway. WHATARETHEFLYINGDISCS? Firstletussaywhattheyarenot.Theyarenotdelusions,fantasy,orlies.Theyarenotconstructed byanyforeigngovernment,orbyourown.Theydonotcomefromthedepthsoftheseathough someofthemmayentertheseaattimes.TheydonotcomefromthePolarregions,orfromTibet orJavathoughitisconceivablethatsometemporarybaseonourearthmaybeutilized.Theyare notconstructionsoftheAtlanteansorotherancientpeoples,preservedincavernsagainstthe comingdayofneed.Wementionsthesehypothesesbecausetheyhaveallbeenseriously advanced.Ourcategoricaldenialshouldreallybereadthisway: Wehavenoevidencethatanyoftheseexplanationsiscorrect,andnoneofthemcoincidewith whatwebelievetobethecorrectfacts.Butweofferthefirstwordandnotthelastinthismatter. Newdatamayappearatanytime. Tothesedenialsetusadd,theethericcraft,theDiscs,donotcomefromanyotherplanet(visible astronomicalbodyonly)ofoursolarsystem,orfromanyotherheavenlybodyknowntous.Sofar asapopularexplanationexists,thisplanetaryoneismostinfavor.Thereasonisobviousandthe reasoninggoesthisway:TheDiscsarenotmadeonthisearthyettheyarerealandnot illusionarythereforetheymustbemadeonsomeotherplanet,presumablyMarsorVenus,since thesearethenearest.Thisreasoning,however,suffersfromwhatlogicianscallanomitted middle,orathirdsomewhat,analternativewhichisoverlooked.Canyoubuildabetter mousetrap?asksamagazinewriterrecently,clearlydistrustinghisownplanetarytheoryyet unabletothinkofanythingelse.Wereplypromptly,wecertainlycan.Thesimplestdescriptionof thismousetrapisourpresentobjective,andifyourpatiencepermitsweshalltrytomakethe wholeconceptreasonablyclearthoughnotnecessarilyacceptabletoyourpersonalthinking,of course. WhataretheDiscsandwheredotheycomefrom?Weshallhavetocombinethequestionsand answers.TheycomefromtheregionofexistencecalledtheEthericPlance,orEthericleveland byuswiththenameEtheria. Whooperatesthem?TheEthericPeople,theEtherians. Aretheyfriendly,orhostile,ordangerous?Neitherfriendlynorhostileonthewhole,butmainly indifferenttowardsus.Buttheyarenotindifferentifweattackthem,orpursueandannoythem, ormakethemuncomfortable(apparently)byouratombombs,thereleaseofatomicornuclear energies.

4. Whydotheycomeintoourskies? 5. Aretheyfriendly,oraretheydangerous?

 Furtheronthispoint:Itishighlylikely,notprovable,thatourAirForcehasalreadylostmorethan oneshipthroughtheirattemptedinterferencewiththeseethericcraft.Itisbelievedandis probablethattheyaresurroundedbyapowerfulmagneticfield,orsomeforcecorrespondingtoit, whicheasilydisintegratesourownaircraft.Itislikelythatthereleaseofatomicenergiesisfelton theethericlevelswithsomediscomfiture.Itispossible,thoughwhollyconjectural,thattheymight intervenetopreventaworldwarwithatomicweapons,andespeciallywithsuchaweaponasthe proposedhydrogenbomb. Butthen,whydotheycomeintoourskiesatall?Tworeasonscanbesuggested,ortwoaspectsof thesamereason.Theseethericcrafthaveappearedatintervalsthroughouthistory,sometimes withoutadefinitecorrelationwithearthevents,butalways(itissaid)whenacivilizationor culturehadreacheditspeakandwasenteringuponaperiodofdeclineandfall.Theirpurposewas simplytoobserveandstudytheconditionsandstateofhumanity,fortheirowninformationand theirhistoricalarchives.Theyhavealsoappearedpriortoterrestrialconvulsions,suchasvolcanic eruptionsandearthquakes.Inthepresentinstance,itislikelythatbothreasonsexist.Thesocial andpoliticalstateoftheworldisindeedperilous.Ourweaponshavebecomeamenacetothe Etheriansthemselves,anditissaidthatseismicdisturbancesareimpending.OverthePacific slope,forexample,theflightofEthershipshasfollowedthemagneticmeridians,northandsouth. ItissaidthattheEtheriansaredoingthisinordertoobservetheformationoftheethericvortexes whichpresageanearthquake;theyarechartingthisarea,andalsothewholeoftheearths surface,forthesamegeneralpurposeofscientificstudy. Now,whateveryouthinkoftheideasandexplanationshereadvanced,rememberthatthereis nothingvagueanduncertainaboutthepresenceofthesestrangecraft,orabouttheirremarkable speedandpowerandcompletesuperiorityintheair.Thisisanintenselypracticalmatterand howfarreachingitmaybe,noonecansay.Thimeansthatourpersonalattitudeisalsoamatterof practicalconcern.LetusrememberthattheEtheriansarenotilldisposedtowardus,thatwe shouldNOTfearthem,shouldneverattackthem.Furtherphenomenaarealmostcertaintooccur andmaybeofthemostremarkablekind.Panicandsuperstitiousfearmayseizeuponthemasses. Itmayhappenthataconsiderablemeasureofresponsibilitywillfalluponthoseuswhohavesome measureofunderstandingofwhatistakingplace.HeretoforetheEtherianshavewithdrawn quietlywhentheirmissionwascompleted;menthoughtofthemasGodsorAngels,orspiritsof theairordemons,embodiedtheminfolkloreandmythology,andforgotthemlittlebylittle.Soit maybe,thistime.Theymaywithdrawfromourskies,andinafewmonthsmenwillhavealmost forgottenthem.Buttherearereasonswhichcannotbeelaboratedhere,forbelievingeventsmay takeanotherandmorestrikingcourse.Neitheryourwillnorminecanstaytheseevents,butfear, fanaticismandpanicmayworkincalculablewoe.Paniciscontagious,itengulfsonelikean enormouswave,andatthemomentwefancyourselvescool,calmandsuperiorofmind,are draggedunderbyit.Nootherconsiderationswouldleadustowritethesepages,whichwillforthe mostpartbereadwithderisionorbewhollydisregarded.

WHEREISETHERIA? Onematterofimmediatepracticalinterest,theinevitablequestion!WhereisEtheria?(Ifyouthink whereisaneasyquestion,goputittothephilosophers!)Butsomeanswermustbemade,sohere isareplyinafewlines,tobeelaboratedperhapsonsubsequentpages. Etheriaishereifweknowwhatheremeans!Alongside,inside,outsideofourworld.Because ourworld,thatis,thesocalleddensematteroftheobjectsinourworld,isararefication.Itis spacedoutlikeavstnetanetwithenormousmeshes.Imagine,ifyouwill,anetofwirewith meshesamilewide.Wouldnotwindandwaterflowthroughthatnetasifitdidnotexist?Alittle friction,very,verylittle! Onthestrandsofthosemesheswelive.Thatisthesocalleddensematterofourworld.Welook outacrossthemeshanddonotseeanythinginit,orhearorfeelanythinginit,andsocallitempty space.Meaninglesswordsintheabyssesoffolly!Wesee,hear,feeltheotherstrandsofthemesh, andcallourworldsolid,firmandmaterial!Callitarealandsubstantialthing!Butthespacesof themeshareathousandandtenthousandtimesgreaterthanthesubstanceofthestrands.Whatis inthesespacesofthemeshofourmatter?Space?Spaceisnotnothing.Spaceisstuff,ismatter. Whatkindofmatter?Thematterwhichmakestheethers.Moredensenotless,butmoredense byfarthantherarefactionsofourworld.ThematteroftheEthericworld!Insidethemolecules, insidetheatoms,otheratomsstillotheratomsinsideofthose,ortenthousandChineseeggs eachinsideofanother.Ifyouthinkthatthisisimagination,orthatthereisnoroomforthese interpenetratinguniversesaskthephysicistandthemathematician.Theywilltellyouthereis nothingintheomniversebutroom;androom,again,isspace,isstuff,isbasicworldstuff,mind stuff,lifestuff;andthereisnoemptinessanywhereAndthatiswhyEtheriaishere!Butitisalso everywhere.Allheavenlybodieshaveanethericrealm. Afewlinesmoreandweshallhavedonewiththemorepracticalandpressingaspectsofour subject.Theethericships,aseveryoneknows,areofmanytypes,notallofthemDiscsbyany means.Somearelongandcigarshaped;manyareshapedlikeballoonsordirigibles;somehave wingsorwinglikeattachments.Manyofthemappeartochangeshapewhileintheair.Theircolor variesalsoandhasalsobeenseentochange.Someofthemresemblefireballs;othersare accompaniedorfollowedbysmoke,vapor,andluminousappearances.Somearetranslucent,or seemtoglowfromwithin.Theytravelatallspeeds,fromzero(stationary)tothousandsofmiles andhour.Theyalsovarywidelyinsize,fromafewfeetoryardsindiametertonearlyincredible dimensions;wehavereportsconsideredtrustworthyofatleastonecrafttenmilesinlength.They haveacuriouswayofdisappearingsuddenlywheninplainsight,andalsoofrapidlydwindlingin sizewithoutwithdrawingindistance.Itiswelltobearalltheseitemsinmind,sinceanysingle explanationmustobviouslycoverallofthem;itisnotenoughtoinventsometheoryforthedisc shapesaloneandthenimaginewhatthatthewholematterisaccountedfor.Now,underthe ethericexplanationwhichwearepresentinghere,ourunderstandingisbrieflythis: ETHERICEXPLANATIONOFFLYINGSAUCERS Allofthetypesofcraftjustmentionedcomefromthesamesource.Allareconstructedby Etherians.Theirvarietyarisesfromthefactthatmanyofthemareexperimental,andthatdifferent typesofthemservedifferenttechnicalpurposes.Thesecraftarebuiltinmatteroftheetheric

planeandareimperceptibletous,sincetheyexistinwhatwecallemptyspace.Theyenterour planeorourlevelofperceptionbyaprocessofmaterialization.Theextremelydensematterwhich fillsinthepatternofethericstressesisreplacedbymatterofthekindthatisvisibletousor better,itsvibrationrateislowereduntilitbecomesvisible.Alittlelikeslowingdownaveryfast fanuntilonecanseeitsblades.Thisiscloselysimilartowhathappensinthephenomenonor apportation(whereobjects,ofanykindorsize,aremiraculouslytransportedintoandoutof sealedrooms,sealedcontainersandthelike).Manypeople,andmostscientists,takenostockin thisallegedphenomenon,butitiswellattestedandcannotbesurrenderedonthataccount. Neitherthepatternnorthemolecularfillingisdestroyed;theobjectbecomesinvisiblebecausethe atomicmotionisspeedup,anditcanpassthroughothermatter(awall,e.g.)becauseofthissame fact.Thisisequivalenttoanincreaseindensitywhenanobjectonourplaceisbeingapported fromoneplacetoanother.ToanEtherian,anobjectmaterializingonourplanewould dematerializeonhis;tousitmaterializesinourfieldofperception,anddematerializeswhenit returnstoitsethericstate. Ifweunderstandthis,weareonthewaytowardaccountingformanyodditemsofbehavior,such ashavebeenmentionedabove. Itisprobablywellknownbythistime,thatseveraloftheseethershipshavefallen,andtheir contentscarefullystudiedalthoughwithutmostsecrecy.Wecannotenterhereuponthispartof, whichhasbeenprintedinotherBSRApublications;wewishtoreferonlytothelittlepeople, dwarfsabout30inchesinheight,whosebodieswerefoundwithintheDiscs.Wehavereasonto believethattheEtherians,whomustoperateontheirbodiesjustastheydoontheetheric substanceofthediscinordertoaccompanythemchoosetomaterializeinsmallforms,simplyfor theconvenienceofoperationandflight.This,likeeverythingelsesetforthhere,isaccordingto ourbestknowledgeandbeliefatthiswriting.Werepeat,thatweareofferingthefirstwordsand notthelastonthisextraordinaryproblem. Thepropulsionoftheetheriancraftisbeyondthepresentconceptsofourscienceyetwehavea goodcluetoitsnature,andshallcommentonitonalaterpage.(Thereisnomotor,propelleror othermechanisminsidethefallendiscs,sofaraswehavebeenabletolearn.) Wemustaddtheextraordinaryfact,thatundercertainconditions,oratcertainstatesof materialization,oratcertainaltitudesandpressures,thesubstanceoftheethershipsisjellylike andactuallydoeschangeinshapeandapparentsize.(Theouterskinofthefallendiscs,however, isharderthansteel,andofunidentifiedsubstance.) Itisourinformationthatcertaintypesoftheethershipsareandhavelongbeenusedforinter planetarytravel.Thosewhopersistinthebeliefthattheycomefromvisibleplanetsofoursystem, willeventuallyseizeuponthisasaconfirmatoryfact.ButtheethershipsdoNOToriginateon visibleplanets,aswehavesaid.Interplanetarytravelissimplyoneoftheirinnumerableuses,and thisfactshouldnotmisleadus.ThecraftaremadeinEtheria,andEtheriaisinandaroundall visibleobjects.Itisalsothehomeandmotherlandofourplane,alltheobjectsweseeaboutus derivefromthatsource,andourownbodiesalso.WeourselvesareEtheriansbyancestryand descent;forEtheriaisthehomeofthehumanrace.Thatweshouldbesogrosslyignorantofitis strangeindeed.

 SOMEWILLUNDERSTAND Itisthisignorance,andthekindofunderstandableintolerancewhichmustaccompanyit,which makesitsodifficult,almostimpossibletoexplainthismattertomanyreaders,notexcludingthe averagescientificworker,theprofessionalman,andthesocalledintellectualsgenerally.The obscurantisteffectsoftheacademicandprofessionalbackgroundareinfactwellknown,exceptto thoseafflictedbythem.Thereare,however,somemillionsofpeople,lessvictimizedbythe hypnoticdreamsofourpseudoculture,whowillwellunderstandwhatwearetryingtosetdown. Iftherearecolorswecannotsee,soundwecannothear,anddenseandsolidbodieswhichwe cannotdiscoverbytouch,itiscertainlynottoodifficulttoconceiveofaworldwhichthough possessingsounds,colorsandmaterialobjects,isyetimperceptibletous.Itwouldbeasunknown tous,bydirectperception,asamanistoanant,orabirdtoabeetle.Andifanyorbeetle,orafish initselementcouldbequestionedandcouldmakeareply,theywouldprobablybedeeply skepticalabouttheexistenceofmenandbirdsunseenandunseeableentitiesallegedtobeliving rightalongsideoftheminthesameworld.Thisis,obviouslyamatterofwhatiscalledplanesof consciousnessorawareness,andnotreallyinthesameworldatall.Theantworldisthenestor hill;thefishworldisalimitedareaofsea;andthoughithappensthatmancanpeerinonbothof

them,theyhavenowayofdiscoveringhim.Atthispointthefruitfulprinciplesofanalogysuggest, thatpossiblythereareinvisiblebeingswhocanpeerinonmanalso.Hemaybethecruxof creation(orcrossofafflictionofit)butisnotnecessarilyitscrown.Andthoughreputedtobea littlelowerthantheangles,thisearthmanifestationofhimatleastmaybebutlittlehigherthana caterpillar,intheeyesofunknownbutobservableIntelligences.Thissomewhatdespitefulguess, however,isalittlebytheway;weintendedtoreturntoourhighschoolphysics(Makemeachild againjustfortonight.)withreferencetoourperceptionofsoundandcolor. Ofcourse,ifyoudefinesoundassensation,asaudibility,thenbydefinitiontherearenosounds youcannothear.Ifyoudefinecolorasseeing,asvisualperception,thenbydefinitionthereareno colorsyoucannotsee.Butthephysicistknowsthatcolorsaredistinguishedfromeachotherby theirwavelengths,andthelengthofthewaveshasbeenmeasured.Red,forexample,hasawave lengthof.00007594;whileviolet,attheotherendofthevisiblespectrum,is.00003968.Allthe othercolorscomeinbetweenwithdecreasingvalues.Butthatdoesnotmeantheseriesorscaleof colorisexhausted;thetabulationofwavelengthsgoesrightalongbelowtheredandabovethe violet.Itisonlyourabilitytoseethemwhichrunsoutonus.Usingthewordcolorinthisvery correctandlogicalsense,itisplainthatanobjectmayhaveacolorwhichwecannotsee,andwill thereforebeinvisibletous.

Thesituationwithregardtosoundisofcourseanalogous.Somepeoplehearsoundswhichothers cannot;manysavagesandnearlyallanimalshaveanalmostmiraculousacuityofhearing,andthe existenceofinaudiblesoundvibrationsisacommonplaceofscience.Awholenewscienceofultra sonicsisnowfastdeveloping.Thepointistooobvioustospendtimeupon.Therearesounds aboutuswhichwecanthear;justastherearecolorswecantsee. Theremaybe,then,accordingtocommonsenseandcommonscience,aworldofsoundandof color,andevenofcoloredobjectsallaboutus,yetwhollyunperceivedbyus. Allthis,aswepromisedyou,issweetlyreasonable.Butnowwecometothesticker.Everyone knows,yousay,thattherearewaves,frequencies,vibrationsofsoundandlightwhichwecannot sensebutwhataboutthismatteroftouch,oftangibility?Wedonotseeorhearthecatontherug ortheantiquerockingchairwithitshundredarmswhenwegogropingandfumblinginthe dark;butwesoondiscovertheminanotherway.Soundlessandcolorlessobjectsareatleast tangible,andifthereisaworldfullofthemallaboutus,whydowenotfeelthem,makecontact withthem,discoverthembyinstruments?Ifthereissuchaworld,yousay,itmustbevaporous likeairorgas,oremanations,radiationsorrays. Theobjectionisnatural,legitimateandanswerable;buttobegin,wemustmakethedifficulty seemworsebyaffirmingthatthisunseeableandunhearableworldiscomposedofmatterwhich, farfrombeinglikevapororgas,isathousandtimesmoredense,moresolid,realandmaterial thantheobjectsofourownplane.Thereissuchathingsasmatter,substancestuffwhichistoo densetotouch.Weweretalking,afewlinesback,aboutthespectrumofcolorandsound.Wemust nowconsiderthatbyanalogyatleastthereshouldbeaspectrumoftouchoroftangibility,also. Therereallyissuchaspectrum,andtheupperlimitofitisfamiliartoeveryone.Whensolidmatter isvaporizedwecannottouchitorusuallyseeit;norcanwefellthepresenceofmostrays, radiationsandemanations.Thedifficulty,then,isaboutthelowerendofthisspectrum.Weare accustomedtothinkingofverydensematter,suchasastoneorbrickorlead,asbeingrealand tangible,andoffluffy,light,floatingthingsasapproachinganintangiblecondition;yethereweare affirmingthatstuffwhichisfarmoredensethanleadorstonecannotbetouchedatall,justfor thatveryreason.Eitherwearetalkingnonsenseorourhabitualcommonsenseviewoftheworld isverynave.Togetstraightenedoutonthisweshallhavetoaskourselvesafewquestions. COMPRESSEDTOINVISIBILITY Letussupposewehavebeforeustwosmallcubes,oneofcorkandtheotherofleadandeachthe samesize,oninchineachdirection.Theleadcubeweighsmore(thepullorpushofgravityonitis greaterthanonthecork),andhasmoremass(whichreferstothequantityofmatterinit);butit hasthesameoverallvolumeastheothercube.Nowimaginethatwecanexertaverypowerful pressureonallsidesatonce,ofthisleadcube,sothatitiscompressed.Thatmeansthatthe particlesofleadareforcedalittleclosertogether.Imaginethispressurecontinuedandincreased untilthecubebecomesahalfinch,aquarterinch,ora16thofaninchindimensions.Imagineit decreasedtoapinpointsize,andthentoapointwhereitbecomesmicroscopic,invisible.Allof theoriginalcubeisthere;allofitsmassandweight;onlythevolumehaschanged.Supposethis ultramicroscopiccubeishurledagainstthecubeofcork.Willthelatterstopit?Thisenormously

heavyandextremelysmallparticlewillpassthroughtheloosestructureofthecorkasifitwere notthereatall.Thecubicinchoflead,byvirtueofbecomingthousandsoftimesmoredensethan thecork,bytheprocessofreducingitsvolume,penetratesthelesserdensitywithease. Whatelsehashappenedinsidethecubeofleadasitwascompressed?Leavingasideallthebooks fulloffactandtheoriesabouttheatom,letusconcentrateonthesinglefactthateveryconstituent particleoftheleadisbelievedtobeinmotion.Whenaparticlemovesithasatrackorpath;there isdistanceinvolved,andalsospeedorrateofmovement.Supposeyouhaveapointerofsomekind whichisswitchedbackandforthacrossadial,sayaonefoot,onewaymovementinonesecond. Cuttheonefootmotiondowntosixincheswithoutchangingspeed.Thepointerwillthencover thesamedistanceinthesametime,butitwillpassoverasixinchspacetwice,insteadofoverthe 12inchspaceonce.Itwillhaveabeatorfrequencyoftwo,asaresultofshorteningitspath.Now whenwecompressthecubeofleadwemayconceivethatthepathsortracksofthemotionofits particlesareshortenedinsomewaytheirspeedisnotchangedbuttheirfrequencyofvibration rateisincreased.Theleadremainsleadbuttheelectronsandnucleioftheatomareatriflecloser together.Ifwekeptthecubeinitsoriginalsizebutpressedmoreleadintoit,theeffectwouldbe thesame;thedensitywouldbeincreased,andsowouldbeitsmassandweight. Wehaveusedthewordspeed,andproperlyspeakingthismeansrateofmotioninanydirection. Speedismeasuredonascaleandhasmagnitudeonly,butvelocityhasbothmagnitudeand direction(avectorquantity).Ifwechangeeitherspeedordirectionwegetachangeofvelocity. Thesearequestionsofcorrectmathematicalusage;butallwearetryingtodohereisalittlecrude picturethinking,toseehowthedensityofmatterisrelatedtothespeedorvelocityorvibration rateofitsparticles.Densityisthequantityofmatterperunitvolume.Increaseddensityand increasedspeedoftheatomicparticlesgotogether.Massincreaseswithvelocityandwith decreaseinsize.Ourultramicroscopicleadcubehasanenormousmass,averysmallsize,anda veryhighvelocityofitsparticles,andahighdensity.Thesecharacteristicswillmakeit penetrative,sothatitwillgothroughthecorkoranylessdensematterlikewindthroughawire mesh. THELOWERENDOFTHESPECTRUMOFTANGIBILITY Itshouldbeclearbythistime,thatifwetakeanysubstance,anyobject,andmakeitextremely dense,wedecreaseitsvolumeuntilwecannotseeitortouchit.Atacertaindensitywereachthe lowerendofthespectrumoftangibilityandofseeablecolors. Wespokeonapreviouspageofthefactthatthesocalleddensematterofourworldisreallya rarefaction,akindofthinningoutofsomekindofverydensestuffcalledspace,ortheethers.But whenwetalkaboutcompressingacubicinchofleaddowntoasizewhereitisinvisible,weseem tobeoffendingcommonsenseagain.Eveniftheleadisararefaction,youmaysay,itcanhardly beastenuousandrarefiedasallthat.Butletislookatthisinthelightofscientificfacts.Suppose anatomtobesoenormouslyenlarged,withallofthedistanceskeptinproportion,sothatthe orbitoftheelectron(ifithasanorbit)hasadiameterequaltothatoftheearthaboutthesun,say 184millionmiles,.Onthatscalethediameteroftheelectronitselfwillbeonly2000miles,andthe diameterofthenucleus,wheremassandweightchieflylie,canbetakenastwomilesonly.A centralmasstwomilesthick,anotherobject2000milesthickatadistanceofsome92million

miles!Evidently,plentyofroominsidethissystem.Andwhatdowemeanbyroom?Wedonot meannothingness,butspaceandspaceisnotnothing.Itisidentifiablewiththeether(s),andthe etherismatterofextremedensity.Itissodensethatwecannotseeorfeelit,anditsfrictionasit flowsthroughthekindofmatterwedoseeandtouchissominutethatourinstrumentshavenot yetdetecteditwithcertainty.Inthisdensematter,insidethesystemofanyatomorcongregation ofatomsofourworld,theremaybeotherworlds,andworldswithinthesealsoworldwithout end. Thephysiscistwillsaythatforhimthecentersoftheatoms,thenuclei,seldomapproacheach othermuchcloserthanoneangstrom,whichisahundredmillionthofacentimeter.Anegative electronhasadiameterofabout35millionthsofaninch,sothatitwouldtakeabout30,000 electrons,touchingeachother,tomeasureoneangstromandreachfromonenucleustoanother. Considerthecomparativevastnessofthespacewhichseparatesandunitesthepartsoftheatom. Doestheideaofnothingnessmakeanysense,ifindeedonecanhavesuchanideaatall?No philosopherhasevermadeprofitfromsuchaconcept.Outofthevoideweread,thisorthat issuedforth;butagain,exnihilonihilfit;andfromNothingnothingwaseverborn.Eventhe scientists,waryofpicturethinking,weregraveledbythisdifficulty.Actioindistans,theyusedto callitortheproblemofactionatadistance. MAGNETISMANETHERICPHENOMENA Holdamagnetoveranailandamiracleoccurs,thenailjumpsasifproddedbydemons,yet nothingseemstoconnectthetwo.Wellthen,reasonstheexperimenter,weshallhaveto inventsomethingtoconnectthem.(Justas,iftherewerenoGodmanwouldneedtoinventone. Buttogobacktothenothingnesswhichliesbetweenyouandthemountainyonder,orbetween youreyeandyouroutstretchedhandasifnothingcouldlieanywhere!Withsuchaconcept,or allegedconcept,youcannotthinkatall.Youmerelyceasethinkinganduttercertainverbalsounds. Rosicrucianshaveaphraseforit:"SpaceistheunperceivedaspectofReality."Morebasicallystill, itisaformoraspectorconditionofconsciousnesswhichattendsonexperience. ETHERICMATTERRESPONDSTOTHOUGHT ItisintheseethericworldsthattheEtherShipsofallforms originate.Ethericmtatterisresponsivetothought~energy.Anyobjectcanbecreatedbythought, will,andimagination;anditdoesnotlackrealityforthatreason.Ethercraftaremadeinthisway intheearthsetheric,intheethericofVenusandMars,verylikelyinotherregionsalso.Thatdoes notmeanthattheyaremadeonthevisibleplanets.Thesecraftcanbe,are,andalwayshavebeen usedforinterplanetaryflight.ItissaidthattheypenetratethegalaxiesoftheMilkyWay.Andthe craftbestknowntous,theDiscsorFlyingSaucers,originateintheEthericofVenusandtheirform imitatesthedisclikeappearancethatplanet.
