Introductory courses
Students wishing to learn more about botanical illustrationor brush up on their skills beore beginning the certiicatesequence can take introductory courses that are not part othe certiicate requirements: Introduction to Botanical Illus-tration, Art Materials or the Botanical Illustrator and Intro-duction to Drawing in Pencil.

Botanical art and illustration is the well-established tradition o portraying plants or scientiic purposes, recording vanishingspecies or historical recollection or rendering the beauty and inspiration we experience in the lora o the world around us.Denver Botanic Gardens’ Certiicate in Botanical Art and Illustration program is designed to teach a comprehensive series oclasses in botanical illustration, oering participants the drawing and painting skills required to render accurate and useuldepictions o the plant world with a ocus on detail. This program is or the dedicated illustrator, as well as the devoted ama-teur. It culminates in a certiicate or some students and oers an ongoing program o botanical classes or others.experience in botanical art. In addition to the 13 requiredcourses, you must select 100 elective hours. The number oelective classes oered in any one year may vary. Guestinstructor workshops may be taken as electives.

scIence And Art lectures
Selected lectures at Denver Botanic Gardens can qualiy orelective credits. Participation in one lecture gives one elec-tive credit hour; you can receive a maximum o 15 credithours rom these lectures. Caé Botanique by Mervi Hjelm-roos-Koski is a ree lecture series open to Botanical Art andIllustration students, Gardens members, the general public,academia and artists. There is no admission ee and pre-registration is not required. The Caé Botanique schedule isposted on the Botanical Illustration blog, or you can receiveurther inormation by joining our mailing list.

Upon completion o all course work, you may apply or port-olio review (held each January and June) by requesting atranscript rom the Registrar and submitting it to the ProgramCoordinator when you request your review. WORKSHOPS
Do not miss this unique opportunity to learn how to paint persim-mon and cabbage (important symbols in its culture) the Chineseway. Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) is a homophone o “things’ and“business”, “market” and “thoughts”. The reddish-orange coloro its ruit symbolizes joy. The Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapavar. glabra) is a symbol or honorable rank, purity and unsullieddescent. You will also explore a number o Chinese charactersthat make up interesting sayings to go with the persimmon andcabbage paintings.
