month celebrates her rst anniversary
as Executive Director and Chief Cura-tor for Charleston’s esteemed GibbesMuseum of Art.Far from a dusty aesthete, thesophisticated and well turned-out Ms.Mack is a three-dimensional humanbeing with a love of life, a passion forart and a hearty laugh, even when the joke might be at her own expense.Associated with the Gibbes since1981, Angela Mack has climbed theinstitution’s ladder step by step, fromassistant curator to associate curator,to chief curator, to deputy director toher current post.“One of the nice things about mycareer,” she said, “is that starting fromthe ground up there isn’t anything any-one can tell me about the Gibbes thatI haven’t already heard.” At the sametime, she admitted with a smile, “I’vealways been doing basically the same job. Only the titles have changed.”Appropriately for a museum thathas been a South Carolina institutionsince 1858 and open to the public since1905, Angela Mack is a true nativedaughter. She was born Angela De-mopolous and reared in Spartanburg,which she recalled as being “typicallysmall town.” Her father ran a success-ful vending machine business servingmany of the state’s major textile man-ufacturers and her mother was a stay athome Mom.As a child, Angela was not at alla sheltered houseplant girl who poredover books of art. In fact, she was whatwas then called a “tomboy,” climbingtrees, riding horses and playing sports.Of course, this was before the federalTitle IX, so organized sports were rarefor girls. But she owned her own horseand received what she believes was “agreat education” in the Spartanburgschool system. As witness to the qual-ity of that education, she noted thather siblings matriculated at Harvard,Wellesley and Randolph-Macon.As for herself, she bucked herGreek father’s belief that womenshould attend only all-female colleges.“I didn’t like that idea one bit!” Theycompromised. He agreed that shecould attend a co-educational college,but only if it were in the South. Shechose Vanderbilt and was accepted.In her sophomore year, she tookan upper level course in the art of In-dia, even though she had not takenany of the basic survey courses in art
